One of our chickens squats when approached and sits for awhile to be pet. Sometimes she will run over and squat when we are standing still. Is this normal behaviour?

It can be normal. She thinks you're the dominant roo.

I have a Japanese Bantam who does the same thing! She is such a sweet bird

Yes, submissive behavior is normal. That is the way they would act around a rooster. Especially if there is no roo in your flock, you take the place of the lead flock member!

She's not sitting to be petted exactly, but that's close enough. She loves you long time. Perfectly normal for either a layer or one that is about to start laying.

Sounds adorable. My chickens are not that fond of me. My rooster attacks me on a regular basis. The hens pay me no never mind.

Just be careful when you walk. Mine won't move out of the way when they do the squat. One hen in particular I have to physically pickup and move her to walk or do chores.
