You mentioned it was a roo, right? Have you bred him to see if his feather trait is passed on to his off-spring? Also how does his fluff-feathers do in rain? Just curious as to what qualities the mutation has when it comes to functioning as protection from elements such as cold or rain.

OMG

My dog got in to the back part of our garden that we separated for the chicken and killed two!!

I found one lying on the ground dead and the other was only feathers!!!! And I can't fin the other 2. I walked around the block and even much further than that and still no sign of them!!!

damndamndamn! I'm sooo angry with myself now.. the one time I get chicken I get a awesome abnormal rooster and now they'r all gone!!!!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that. I've had experiences like this. neighbors dog killed the love of my life... Rosalita was extremely people friendly, to the point of nuisance...But, I've saved a few from attacks... At present we're are putting field fencing around our prop. and actively training our dogs to be respectful. Our flock are not free ranging now because it's too dangerous... Maybe soon.

Well hopefully if you ask neighbors, some of them survived. Its often the case that if they had a means to flee -- while the dog is killing one the others are heading for "cover". Check with neighbors and let them know you are missing 3 as feathers may only mean the dog got a mouth full of feathers. NOT the bird. Finding body parts is the only way you can be sure they are dead.

My aunt had an interesting way to deter dogs on the farm from killing her free range hens. She trained each dog using a bundle of wing feathers that she would hold in one hand, while having the dog on a leash. She would take the dog into the pullet coop and walk the dog. When it lunged at the birds, it got wacked with the feathers. Over and over this would go on and soon, the FEATHERs were seen by the dog as "not cool". Every dog that was to come onto the farm went through their indoctrination and it worked every time. No harm (physically) to the dogs but mentally they got the picture.

After that the dogs & the chickens could have the run of the farm yard with no problems.

well, I found two of the 3 missing chicken! the rooster and one hen! My dog buried them

So now I only have hope for one chicken that might be in the neighbors yard! I hope I'll get her back! Thanks for the nice replies.
