Hi all :) I got 4 more chicks Saturday and one of them seems to be missing bum down and her poop lands on her butt (as opposed to squirting to the floor). She is eating/pooping I'm just not sure what to make of this; all my other chicks are fluffy butts :/ The other chicks from this batch *may* be missing some body fluff but it may also be that they're dropping down to start feathering - they're 3 weeks. I took some pics of the other birds to if they'd help; they didn't turn out very well but better than nothing perhaps

edit: the pertuding part that the poop comes from is bare and you can see skin through the matted/missing down on the part that does have down

Here's the other chicks thin body fluff; the 3rd pic shows it the best but you can kind of see on the wing tips(?) in the first couple

The lack of down is not an issue. Overall health is. Along with chronic pasty butt, the accumulation of poop crust around the vent, is the real danger of constipation. This condition often is overlooked, causing rapid decline in the afflicted chick, and death can result surprisingly quickly.

The signs to be on the watch for are lethargy, red - rimmed and dull eyes, lack of weight and size gain, and no appetite. The cure is coconut oil administered orally as soon as the symptoms are noticed.
