Is this scaly leg mites?

I just had an outbreak of scaly leg mites...I soaked in warm water, scrubbed the legs with soap, dried, applied VetRx (from TSC), and applied vaseline. I've been doing this every 3 days for about 2 weeks now. I also threw out the bedding in the coop, and sprinkled the ground, roost, etc. with poultry dust. Question: How do I know when to stop the above treatments? This is my first time raising chickens and dealing with leg mites. I noticed on the hen that had it the worst, her scales fell off. The other ones just had a mild-moderate case of leg mites...will their scales fall off too? Thanks!

Ok I just finished!! :D  I waited for him to go to his windowsill and then took him inside, soaked his feet in epsom salt mixed with water. Then I dried his legs and applied the vaseline! Now he's back on the windowsill and ready to sleep! I have to admit it was very fun doing this! :celebrate

Awesome! :thumbsup

You do not need to be that thorough really. Scaly leg mites are not nearly as infectious as lice or the type of mites that come out to suck their blood. One or two applications of Vaseline will smother them (dead) and it will take some time for their scales to fall off and regrow. Just give them time :)

Don't scrub the legs, or peel the scales off. Just let it fall off naturally. If you are really concerned, try Nustock. That stuff takes care of everything!

Thanks!

Just back in from soaking some chicken-legs in vaseline. In my experience, once is enough in 90% of the time, and within 2 weeks the legs will be back to normal.
It's easy to threat but if you don't threat it, it can really hurt your chickens, leaving wounds on their legs and even give problems with the blood flow.

sounds like I was definitely over treating. I read a lot of information on how to treat it but I could never find out what happens after you've treated it. Thanks for the advice...I need all the help I can get.

I really wish you the best of luck! I also agree with it only needing to be treated once, or twice at the most. Usually twice is enough. :)

How did everything work out for you? I have a hen & a rooster with feathered feet that look like this & not sure if it's their breed or mites. Not sure if I should treat or not.

Hey, It worked out great! I covered his eyes with a cloth and he held perfectly still! I don't see that much of a difference yet but I read that it takes some time to loose the old scales and grow new ones! DaphneNL is right it never hurts to just do it! At least then you can be sure that you've gotten rid of it!
