This thread is AWESOME!! I have a few hens that look like the roo in the picture, just a touch of roughness to the scales, and I was starting to worry. I'll try the vaseline and let you know how it goes

It's been 15 days since I treated my chickens. The old scales are slowly falling off now. Nice to see some pretty new legs underneath.

Great! I can't wait to see my roo with pretty legs! He was already like this when I got him so I never saw him with smooth legs!
Good luck!![]()
Sorry to hear that! Hopefully he'll get better! Luckily scaly leg mites is very easy to treat! Good luck!!
Hey, It worked out great! I covered his eyes with a cloth and he held perfectly still! I don't see that much of a difference yet but I read that it takes some time to loose the old scales and grow new ones! DaphneNL is right it never hurts to just do it! At least then you can be sure that you've gotten rid of it!
I did it twice just to be sure! I soaked them in a warm water and epsom salt solution! I used about a tablespoon of epsom salt per gallon of water! I put a small blind fold on my rooster to make him hold still then just placed him into a small tub filled with the solution so that his feet are under water! Then I used an old, soft toothbrush and scrubbed his feet a little and dried him off! I don't think it's good to keep him in the water/salt for too long since it probably burns a but after some while! If your chicken are in a coop at night then I don't think that the moist feet will bother them much! If you just dry them off nicely they'll be fine! And the vaseline will also make their feet feel warm!Did you only have to treat the one time??? Also do you have to soak with warm water first? Seems like some people suggest to do that first. I can do this of course but with the colder weather hate to do this step with our feather footed gals.
