Is this scaly leg mites?

This thread is AWESOME!! I have a few hens that look like the roo in the picture, just a touch of roughness to the scales, and I was starting to worry. I'll try the vaseline and let you know how it goes

It's been 15 days since I treated my chickens. The old scales are slowly falling off now. Nice to see some pretty new legs underneath.

Great! I can't wait to see my roo with pretty legs! He was already like this when I got him so I never saw him with smooth legs!

Sorry to hear that! Hopefully he'll get better! Luckily scaly leg mites is very easy to treat! Good luck!!

Hey, It worked out great! I covered his eyes with a cloth and he held perfectly still! I don't see that much of a difference yet but I read that it takes some time to loose the old scales and grow new ones! DaphneNL is right it never hurts to just do it! At least then you can be sure that you've gotten rid of it!

Did you only have to treat the one time??? Also do you have to soak with warm water first? Seems like some people suggest to do that first. I can do this of course but with the colder weather hate to do this step with our feather footed gals.
Thank You Everyone on this link for all the helpful info!

I did it twice just to be sure! I soaked them in a warm water and epsom salt solution! I used about a tablespoon of epsom salt per gallon of water! I put a small blind fold on my rooster to make him hold still then just placed him into a small tub filled with the solution so that his feet are under water! Then I used an old, soft toothbrush and scrubbed his feet a little and dried him off! I don't think it's good to keep him in the water/salt for too long since it probably burns a but after some while! If your chicken are in a coop at night then I don't think that the moist feet will bother them much! If you just dry them off nicely they'll be fine! And the vaseline will also make their feet feel warm! :)

Have you guys ACTUALLY done the vaseline thing??? Oh man, I did it this morning and it was hilarious! Me reaching into the pasture pen, grabbing a chicken, and spending five minutes slapping, smearing, and rubbing the vaseline all over their legs and up under their scales (and combs for good measure). Five minutes for each of my 8 chickens... I can only imagine what it would be like with more

Each time they kicked (Read: "Why are you touching my leegggs??"), they smeared vaseline all down my front. Each time I grabbed a chicken, I got vaseline all over their wings. It was a sticky, goopy mess!

I'm going back out to do the roosts right now, and then to DE the nests, because I forgot to do those when I did the rest of the coop and they think it's funny to sleep in the nest boxes.

Now I have a bunch of hens walking around saying BwakBwakBwaaaaaaakk!! with straw stuck to the bottoms of their feet...

Haha! Great pictures! Mine only got sand on them but it still looked pretty funny! I put it on after they went on their roost (windowsill) to sleep! Its much cleaner that way!

I'm glad we humans don't get scaly leg mites! I'd hate to go to bed with vaseline all over my legs!

Don't wanna rain on your parade mysunwolf, but I don't really see any signs of scaly leg mites.

And I did the vaseline thing. And I always forget that everything will be covered in vaseline until the next morning when I want to check for eggs. Trying to open a door, door slips out of my hands. Grmbl.
