Is this snake in my coop harmful

The thing about snakes is that if they are there they came for the rodents and will stick around for the rodents. They don't eat but a few times a month and the snake itself will attract predators as do the rodents. They might not harm the grown chickens but they are not doing you any favors.

Oh, the eye pupil method of identification? If I am that close to see I have a shovel in my hand and swinging hard.

Exactly. Same with the, what was it, size of the scales? Dude! I'm not getting that close to a possibly venomous snake in order to identify whether or not it's venomous, are you kidding? Pardon me, Mr Snake, may I please look closely at your fangs to see if they're retractable, in order to determine if you are capable of killing me? Pleeeeease!
