Is this the right kind of wood chips?

We've been reaching out to local tree trimming services in our area in Hope's to find wood chips for our run. We've not used them before and I want to make sure I get the right stuff. I've included a picture of what the tree guy sent us.

I'm worried this is too small. And if it is what should I do?

Nice ! If anything you might want to pick out some of the bigger chunks/strips. I’ve had birds get bumblefoot from splinters from a high landing off the perch onto long wood shavings.

Has a lot of leaves in it. Nothing wrong with that. It will breakdown down faster and you will have nice finished compost come spring.

as long as there isn’t cedar you are good. (look for evidence of cedar vegetation if you can’t ID the wood)

You should probably age it a while because all that greenery can promote the temporary growth of harmful rather than beneficial fungus. Once it's aged the problem goes away.

A little cedar in a mix used in an open, outdoor run isn't likely to be a problem.

Also, there is a difference between Eastern and Western cedar with Eastern being the more irritating.

how do I age it, and how long would I need to age it? We live in Michigan and I'm wanting it in there before winter to help with muddy run issues we experience in the spring time.

Long enough that the leaves don't look like green leaves anymore.
