I have a 8 month old ISA brown. She has developed a very bloody, swollen vent area. I cannot feel an egg, so she’s not egg bound. I removed her because the other hens were pecking her. I’ve soaked her in epsom salt water, given her probiotics, vinegar water, and kept her confined. She’s eating and drinking. It looks as if her vent area is ulcerated. I have scoured this site and the internet and I am at a loss for what is wrong with her. Her sister died in November and had the same issue, but it was advanced and infected. This one is also infected, but I don’t know the cause. I know an infection and Vent Gleet are treated very differently so I’m at a loss. I did use antibiotic ointment on the bloody area.

Hi @Mommaxhristyx3 :frow Welcome To BYC

Where are you located in the world (state/country)?

It looks like your hen has a wound under her vent that has become infected. If you have vet care, that would be best.

I would continue to try to clean/flush that out. Use saline, chlorhexidine or diluted betadine. The epsom salts soak is o.k. too. Have you noticed if there are or were any maggots in the wound? If there are any, those need to be taken off.
Spray the wound with Vetericyn or apply a triple antibiotic ointment.

Try to keep the wound as clean as you can and keep her someplace dry.

I’m located near Little Rock, ar. I’m keeping the wound clean and putting triple antibiotic ointment on it. She seems very content at the moment. I’ll keep you posted. It’s just odd that her sister had the same type of wound.

I don’t think you are dealing with vent gleet or a prolapse, but vent pecking which can lead to cannibalism and death. Wyorp Rock has given good advice on soaking and medicating her vent. Keep her isloated until her vent has healed. Vent gleet usually causes a bad odor, red vent with white patches, and runny contant droppings.

She may have had some diarrhea or redness around her vent that has attracted pecking. Vent pecking starts out from things like overcrowding, too much light or heat, not feeding a balanced chicken feed with enough protein, or boredom when confined to a coop. It can easily spread to other hens and become a habit.

Once she heals, you might want to use some pine tar or an anti-peck lotion, or BluKote on any red skin. I would feed some higher protein feed such as Flock Raiser for a short time to see if it helps. How much room do they have? Some hang cabbages to peck, and logs to climb on to help with boredom.

I have 4 hens in a 5ft x 25ft run. It’s been raining a lot so I haven’t been able to let them out as much, so that may have contributed to th3 pecking. I try and feed scrambled eggs at least once a week. I’ll try a higher protein food as well. Thank You for all the advice. I have her inside and she seems to like it a lot. She’s pretty content at the moment.
