Is this what chick pasting looks like?

I just got my first set of chicks on Tuesday - 8 baby Buffs. They're all looking great except for one which has the following condition below. This looks like it's right on her rear. What am I looking at? My wife and I have taken a warm wash cloth to it with no avail. It's quite hard and the little girl chirps her lungs out when we wipe. What is it and what course of action should I be taking?

Looks like my Buff Orp when she had pasty. I ran her bottom under warm water until it was gone, then hit her with a hair dryer and turned her loose. She peeped bloody murder the whole time. It never came back and she is now 2 years old......

This does look like pasty butt, what you need to do is get a small dish of warm water (the same temp. you would give a newborn baby), fill it till its just under her belly, gently rub, and pull away the poop. dry her as best you can, and put her back in with the rest. keep a close eye on her to make sure there are no other symptoms, and check her butt at least once a day for a week, to make sure she doesn't get it agian.

Yup, that's pasty butt alright, very important that you get this taken care of soon! For my little girls, I had to dunk their little behinds in a dish of warm water and used a tiny amount of a very mild cleanser on a dish towel to work the gunk out of their fuzz and then dry them off really well. It takes a little time and they will very obviously not like the procedure, but it must be done. Do a search on pasty butt and you will find 101 other ideas on how to get the gunk off. Make sure you check daily for this issue, some little ones will continue to get it and you'll have to keep cleaning it daily until it resolves itself.

a dab of olive oil will help keep the poo from sticking after cleaning her up

Thanks for the suggestions! Soaking her bum in some warm water for a few and then gently wiping (and wiping, and wiping) with a warm washcloth was enough to get her clean!

Glad you got it off, and um..... thanks for the pic. I'm getting my 1st chicks in May and have been wondering what pasty butt looks like!

Now I know what to look for.
