Is Tweety Recovered?

i just found this and going through ones that list "cheese-like" ____ in the eye socket http://maransofamericaclub.com/Poultry-Health-Issues.php. it is excellent and easy to use.

OH, to lighten things up, one of our hens laid its first egg.

all were replaced this year b/c last year's were toooooo noisy.

here is my untrained guess:
Infectious Coryza (Bacteria)
Sneezing - clogging of nostrils and sinuses with a sticky, putrid smelling exudate - exudate accumulates and causes swelling of face, eyes and wattles - cheesy core sometimes develops in eye

Caused by stress, drafts - birds which recover from severe infections become carriers and seem to become ill often - sulfa drugs have been a satisfactory treatment

So are you going to try Sulfa ? Is she smelly ?

Also saw on another thread...
boric acid eye wash (for humans... can be bought pre-mixed)
&
used tea bags placed on eye (and left as long as bird will allow)

Even if you use the Sulfa, any of these would probably soothe the eye while she heals and promote healing.

OH... and Congrats on your girls first egg !

I have also subscribed to the post "Eyeworms or not" by Ivywoods because they are describing "foam" in the corner of the eye... what they find out might be helpful.

Also the post "Help a Respiratory Infection!" by michelle Bray describes "bubbly" eyes.

What's going on?!?

mmaddie's mom -

i'll look for those posts right now.

i was afraid to put any medicine on the eye as i'm still not sure of the cause.

last night we used the salt wash. today the bubbles are not so fizzy and are larger.

i'll post anything i find.

THX!

if i didn't mention: our vet prescribed "orbax" which is orbifloxacin and an ointment for cleaning the eye, "vetrogen" which is gentamicin sulfate. but that was the second week of august and today is almost in october. the medicines cleared up the swelling and "cheese"

twice we've treated with fenbendazole for worms (including gape worm) and once put duramycin-10 which is tetramycin in their water.

but still he has the fizz in the corner of his eye and all the chickens are stretching their necks like they have the rare "gape worm."

i'm wondering if he/she has ruptured the membrane separating the sinus and the eye socket. this would/might explain the "fizz".

and oh, this all started after a huge rain that caused many animals in the area (living out of doors) to become ill with cold like symptoms.

It's been a while... but was wondering about Tweety. Is he/she fully recovered? Did the eye bubbling stop? Just wondering.

Hello, mmaddie's mom

he/she is recovered. i'm pretty sure it was infectious coryza and MG. possibly with some leftover material in sinus'. w/ MG, there will be recurrence so i'm on the lookout everyday. swelling in face; separation from flock; nasal discharge; odd feces; odd sounds from breathing, etc. Especially as it fall become winter

as of today, no bubble/fizz have returned. Tweety is still lazy being late out of the coop by 30 minutes and always the first to bed. but for most of the day he acts like Tweety. a completely self-centered and aloof bug chaser.

ha, i'm guess he/she is a roo.

thanks for support during Tweety's illness.
