Is your computer backed up?

Just wanted to put a reminder out there for everyone to make sure you back up any important files on your computer, even if you are not having any problems with your computer! Make sure you have your pictures, documents, and music on DVDs or external hard drives. I've been hearing a lot of stories lately about people getting viruses on their computers, or that their computer turns off and never comes back on. I've spent a good deal of time backing up all my pictures because they are just too valuable to lose! Last night my protection software picked up a virus and it reminded me that I had some folders of pictures I had not backed up yet. It really stinks when you wait too long and have to cross your fingers that these files haven't been ruined by a virus! Thank goodness my computer is fine, but you just never know!

I have a daily reminder that pops up on my computer to tell me to do a backup... Um, I haven't done it for two years...

We've got our three puters networked, but you can't access files in B, while logged onto A, unless B is also turned on.

This was a harsh lesson to learn when my hard drive crapped out this week. THOUGHT I'd covered my bum, but alas it is not so.

I've got one word now stuck in my head RAID. Though friend David was a paranoid for insisting on RAIDs in his puters, now not so much.

BTW for those who donno what a RAID is... Redundant Array of Independent Disks basically it's a stack of hard drives. And when you save anything it's saved to all of them. They are NOT cumulative. If you have four (random number) 500k drives you do NOT have 2000k of space. You have 500k of files, four times. Four copies of your chicken coop plans, four copies of your monthly bills excel spreadsheet, etc. So that if one of the hard drives gets corrupted and crashes you still have three copies of all that work, it's not just lost to the black hole of computer hades.

Considering all the research I had saved... everything from next year's Christmas inventory to chicken coop plans, to breeds research of fowl, cows, pigs, even fish to bill information to building plans... oh yeah, REALLY kicking myself for not 'splurging' on the RAID system.

just about sums it up.

I also learned this the hard way. Not sure why, but one day I could only get to the "Welcome" page. Tried to reformat the hard drive and found that the hard drive was corrupted. Can't say for sure what caused it because I'm not that computer savvy, but I did learn one thing. NOTHING was saved.

Got a new hard drive, everything is formatted, and now I save all pictures and documents to cd's. I do not fear another crash as I will have ALL of my precious info. I purchased a separate fire safe for my cd's.

Having your computer crash is kind of similar to a house fire..... what can you replace? What can't you replace? If it is something that you would miss, SAVE it somewhere else.

Thanks for the reminder!!!
