ISA Brown or imitator?

IMG_5997.JPG

This is an Isa Brown.

That looks like a cockerel. Unless you can't for another reason, you won't get chicks from a rooster unless a hen goes broody, and you let her set. Usually, hens bred up for laying are not going to go broody.

Not only is the bird in question a cockerel, but the other birds are not ISA browns. They are all either production reds or hatchery RIR. ISA browns would be more orangey brown with white underneath... do a search for photos of Red Sex Links which is a generic term for ISA Brown or any of the other "brand" names and hopefully you will be able to see the difference.
The birds in the photo are red with dark undertones suggesting probably RIR.

I will be confused until they are old enough to start laying eggs I guess, lol! I have seen many posts of Isa to try and familiarize myself and some are lighter brown and some look just like mine. I will wait and see. I gather eggs daily, so glad to know I need not worry about chicks unless a hen sets the nest. I will monitor for roo activity and plumage.
They are nice chickens no matter. Thanks much.

image.jpeg Just to update, the chicken in question is a cockerel. He is quite pretty with a nice character. I have him separated currently just to avoid fertilizing and possible hen frenzy with mating. I will need to decide if he is staying, since the crowing has begun. Nice rooster though to me AND the family dog, Bella.
