Isaac Almost Killed Another SonToday...Deacon Has Recovered, and..... (update 11/30)

Deacon's feet are fine now. He still doesn't have 100% full range of motion of his neck, can tell from his grooming and dustbathing. His comb points are still not upright again. He's having to spend most of his time in a cage because he goes to fight with either Atlas or Xander at the fence when he's loose. I'm about to tell DH that he needs to do something about his goober of a rooster.

He's reinjured his feet. Stupid rooster. Fighting at the fence with Rex, which he has NEVER done and also with little Xander. He's never challenged Rex, not ever. Now, my plans to put him in with Rex, even just to let him free range at the same time as Rex are pretty much shot. Rex will kill him now that Deacon has dared to challenge him. Just look at his back toes today.

He sure is, Kelly. After his separation to recuperate, he is in a fighting mood and that may get him killed. I am at a loss as to what to do with the boy right now. He's not giving me many options.

Or he is out to prove a point that he is top rooster to someone or now basically anyone

This one will never be top rooster around here unless someone dies and a space opens up for him to have one of the coops to himself. He's lean bodied with only one spur. His brother, nephew and father are all much, much larger males and I don't think he would come out on top of any fight (unless he took on the bantam Cochin rooster, LOL).

Been real busy lately and haven't been on much. Just finished reading this thread...Deacon is really acting out. Seems he has decided to take the offense mode instead of the defense. Sorry for all your man chicken drama and hope it will soon get better. I have always wanted a rooster, but kinda glad I don't now.

Glad to see you checking in again, but I sure understand "busy". One or two roosters is not a problem. Deacon is a problem because he has no place to go where he is accepted. I've never been able to successfully run two roosters in a flock other than with the Belgian d'Anvers. Isaac doesn't share. Rex doesn't share. When Deacon was running away from trouble, he was manageable, but if he thinks he's fit to challenge Rex now, that is going to be the end of him. He thinks he can challenge Atlas because when Atlas was younger, Deacon could run and the fence and make him jump. Guess he got delusions of grandeur.

Strange, I have 2 welsummer roosters that are coexisting fine. Of course the older one beat the tar out of his father - but he's fine with his brother because he is beneath him. My barnevelders don't have any issue, I ran 3 last year, but now I have LOADS more. (still thinning out the cockerels)

When I was raising up Indy and Rex in the flock with Isaac, it seemed to be working out fine, until that day when I found Indy dead and it was obvious what had happened. But, Rex was still in the flock with his daddy and roosting near him every night, just like Deacon was, then Isaac slept on the floor because he couldn't make it onto the roost with his stiff leg during our extreme cold snap (almost zero*), and got frostbitten feet. He had to be separated for treatment and when he and Rex met up on range for the first time, it was plain that Rex decided those were his hens now and dad could not come back. If I had not broken up the fight, Isaac would be dead (he can't breathe well under stress and had already fallen). I wish I knew how it would have all played out if Isaac had never been forced to leave his flock.
