Isbar thread

Hmmm, that is interesting. I was expecting a lightly colored egg from my Isbar/dorking cross. Father is Isbar mother is Dorking. Sparrow is a new layer. This is the second egg I got from her. It should be interesting to see what her sister produces(she's also Isbar/dorking)

Nice! What color egg do dorkings lay?

They lay white eggs which is why I was thinking Sparrow's egg would be much lighter. I'm certainly not complaining! My Isbar cockerel has been breeding her quite a bit so I'm thinking I'll hatch out some of her eggs in a month or so. Should be interesting to see what color eggs her chicks produce!

This is Pillow, my other Isbar/Dorking cross. Sister to Sparrow. She should be laying any day now!

This is Sparrow! She's so darn pretty!

And of course my boy Captain. He's my favorite...shhhh! Don't tell the others!

off hand does anyone remember the breeding combos that creat blues again, I have it in a book somewhere but too lazy to look it up:

it was like...

blue X black =50% black 25%blue and 25% splash combos. that is an example not real.

Thanks for your imput. I am considering a black roo on blue.

Congrats on the egg, lawatt!

I have found the egg color genetics with my Isbar mixes interesting. I have always heard that the rooster is responsible for the egg color, but I am not finding that to be the case. I have a girl who is Isbar roo x SFH pullet. She just started laying and lays a cream colored egg like her mother. I also have 2 girls that are Orpington roo x Isbar hens. They both lay eggs in the green range - one is a gray/green and the other is a light olive egg.

Sometime in the future, I may breed the Isbar x SFH to her brother. It will be interesting to see if any green egg layers result.

as requested, here are some egg pictures:

campine on the left, then pure isbar, then the 3/4 isbar-1/4 marans pullet's egg, then a birchen marans.

unfortunately my 1/2 isbar-1/2 marans hen (the pullet's mom) hasn't restarted laying yet, but here's a picture with one of her eggs from last year (second from right):

you can see it's more of a grayish green, a true olive color.

and one last photo from this morning:

two mint-greens from a pure isbar, and three avocado ones from the mixed girl. interestingly, the cream-colored egg is laid by another isbar -- I'm not going to use her for breeding, for obvious reasons, but outwardly she looks totally like a splash isbar, but no green shell. it's such a pretty peachy color, though, i'm glad to have her in the mix.

Here is my Isbar young rooster - I got him and a couple of pullets from Greenfire as "packing peanuts" - that they identified as Isbars. What do you think? I don't know anything much about this breed. Is he a Blue Isbar?

Trying to fatten him up a bit. He's not as well filled out as my Cream Legbar - he's in that teenaged boy skinny stage. :)

Personally, he has way too much red for my taste. He may be pure, but with that much red he could also be mixed. Is he the only (Isbar) cockerel you have? I would not use him for breeding. I got a couple of "packing peanuts" with my Isbars from GFF that I am still trying to identify 4.5 months later. I was told they are Orust - they are not. My guess is they are Isbar mixes. :/ ETA - Actually, he looks a lot like a cockerel that I have growing out that I know is Isbar x SFH. I'll try to get pictures later today.

I would not use him. As KYTinpusher wrote, GFF is in the habit of this kind of unidentified "extra" chick. IMO, they have some serious integrity issues. I know the newest import by GFF is showing a lot of red, and some say there are a lot of birds like this in Sweden, but...I'm not convinced.
