I was just thinking today that isn’t it odd how people are so against buying puppies from puppy mills because the parents are kept in horrible conditions and just bred until they are no longer profitable. And I thought to myself that the egg industry is pretty much the same, yet no one seems to care about these chickens who will be gassed or slaughtered after 18 months in these horrid conditions producing eggs for the egg companies until they start to lay 6 eggs a week instead of 7 so they aren’t profitable to the industry.

We have a couple egg factories not too far from me. They don't slaughter their hens they auction them off.
They sell them when they moult so they look like he'll and sell for less then $1 each. Only catch is they sell in 100 lots.

There was a huge movement here about their housing conditions. They all moved away from battery cages and went to "cage free". Sounded great and consumers where satisfied. No one mentioned to them that cage free just meant throwing them all wall to wall in one huge building. These conditions are just as bad if not worse then what they had.

That’s really great to hear that they auction the hens off instead of killing them. People think that if the carton says “cage free” then the eggs must be from happy hens, but they couldn’t be further from the truth.

I think more people care than used to, which is in part why raising backyard flocks has gained such momentum in the past few years.
That’s true but I find it odd that someone running a puppy mill will face charges for animal cruelty but the factory farmers won’t.

Yep.
They picture a pretty flock running around a large green pasture eating bugs and soaking up the sunshine.
I won't even talk about their real living conditions.

I had no idea about these lawsuits. You only hear about eggs when there’s salmonella.
