Hi! We're looking to add to our flock, and was wondering if anyone had any Rhode Island reds, Silkies, and/or Speckled Sussex. We're in town so preferably hens/female chicks, but if you can't determine gender that's alright, too. We're in Laporte County, Indiana (NWI) if you could just let me know and we can work something out!

Have you called around your local feed stores, to see if they will be selling chicks this spring?? I know TSC has what they call CHICK DAYS,, You can order thru store smaller quantities than from larger hatcheries.
In my area,(which is not exactly close for you) Farm & Fleet sells chicks. (now or soon, haven't checked)
I know that they carry the most common requested breeds. F&F also has a 6 chick minimum purchase. I believe this is to discourage peeps not serious about keeping chickens. Many peeps with no knowledge about chicken purchase chicks for EASTER, as pets. After Easter, there are many available as pets for adoption. Some of those pets don't make it to that stage.
That is why I think the 6 chick minimum is a GOOD IDEA.
Another feed store I know will sell with no minimum. Their selection of breeds is also very limited.

Thank you so much! We recently had a coon sneak into the yard (during the day) and eat one of our hens unfortunately, so we were looking to add some more. We were also told if we wait until TSC to stock chicks, they wouldn't be ready for fair time. And when you order online they come in tens. Thank you for the reply! ❤

Some ideas:

1. Go to a show - older birds are sold. For example, in Western OH (near Indiana border) the Dayton Fancy Feathers show - this is screen shot of their fb page with events.

Also, you can buy "Started pullets" from a hatchery. They are not chicks, but nearing lay. Shipping is costly, but you may have a hatchery near enough for you to drive to. Meyer hatchery (west of Cleveland) sells them, but so do many other large hatcheries. RIR would be a common selection in started pullets.
