Isolating Hen

Hi @oldhenlikesdogs

I have a coop the hens only go in to lay and sleep.

The hens are in the pen during the day unless they are in the nesting boxes in the coop.

I could put her in a big wire crate in the pen during the day and then move her to a smaller wire crate in the coop at night. My coop isn't huge.

I think as long as they can see her for most of the day that would work well. Sometimes especially in smaller set ups it can be hard to get a hen accepted back into the flock when she's been missing too long. The pecking order needs to be established again, which can turn brutal.

If you are willing to change the bandage on a daily basis, I would do so. As you mentioned flock dynamics will change and us females don't like change! ( Well come of us) However, another member mentioned chicken booties for bumblefoot and I discovered these for ducks and chickens:

While I have never tried these, I'm definitely interested in the concept. You can find these on Amazon.com and I'm not sure how they are sized. As to how long it will take to heal is up to the bird. My guess would be seven to ten days.

Good luck!
