My 1y/o Barred Rock hen is having trouble with one of her legs. I noticed 2 weeks ago that she had feces stuck to her butt feathers so I cleaned her up and treated for worms. She was eating, drinking and acting normal. Then, about a week ago, I found her on the floor of the coop puffed up, weak, pale comb and unable to walk. I brought her inside and gave her an epsom salt soak and massaged her belly thinking maybe she was egg bound. I did this for three days and no egg. She started eating and drinking after the first day and I slowly saw improvement in her walking. I put her outside on the fifth day because she was doing much better although still having a little trouble with one of her legs and thought she could use the fresh air and nice stretch. That evening she went into the coop on her own and managed to get up on the roosting bar fairly high off the ground. I left her out there because she seemed to be fine and thought if she was able to get up that high, she should be ok. Early the next morning I found her on the bottom of the coop again, very pale this time, and blood all over her back feathers near her vent and on the ground. Again, I immediately brought her inside and gave her an Epson salt soak. I also massaged her belly again. Immediately after the bath she was able to stand up and when she went to go to the bathroom, a very large amount of blood clots came out. Like, projectile came out! I treated for coccidia. She was weak and slow moving for about another day but still continued to eat and drink. Also, no more blood after that one episode. She’s doing much better today although still having trouble with that same leg and still no egg from her. (I understand that she won’t lay if sick, injured, etc.) When she walks she kind of kicks it out with each step. She’s a little unstable on it as well. One other thing I noticed is that her poop is dark green and bright green. There are no white urates in it, it seems to be bright green instead. Nothing feels broken or dislocated but I’m not an expert. Her foot is warm so there’s definitely blood supply going to it and no visible injuries such as bumble foot, cuts, etc. I work at a veterinary hospital and don’t know if it would be worth getting an x-ray? I’m just wondering if anybody has any ideas of what could be causing this and how to treat it. I hate to put her to sleep since she still has the will to live but I don’t want her to suffer either. My guess is a possible dislocated leg but again, I am no expert. Any help would be appreciated! Sorry for the long post!😐

Welcome To BYC

What wormer and dosage did you use?
How did you treat for Coccidia?

No eggs at all - did you feel inside the vent for an egg?

What do you feed? Any chance she ate moldy feed?

With her not laying egg, the lethargy, the blood and limping - I would suspect some type of reproductive disorder. Maybe cancer.
If you can get a fecal float and gram stain that may help i.d. if she's got another issue like Enteritis. If that's not possible, then treating her with an antibiotic like Tetracycline, Tylosin, Amoxicillin.

Do you feel bloat/swelling or fluid in the abdomen?

Wazine for deworming, Corid for coccidia. Both given orally for the allotted amount of time. She eats Layer Pellets made at a local farm (not store bought feed) and free ranges most of the day so although I didn’t come across any moldy feed, that doesn’t mean she didn’t get into something while out. As awful as it sounds, I did glove up/lubricate and felt inside her vent as far as I could (after the blood incident) and couldn’t feel anything. Her belly is not bloated and just to be sure it’s not water belly, I’m weighing her frequently to catch any abnormal weight gain/loss. I may take her in for an x-ray just to see if gives me any answers. I’ll do a fecal float as well-possibly send it off to the lab for in-depth testing since it’s free for employees. LOL. Thank you for any advice you can give regarding my answers to your questions.
