Shooting a dangerous animal on your own property is legal, but dragging the dead animal to someone else's property is an easy way to get filmed on a doorcam and arrested for animal cruelty. It would also pointlessly create mortal enemies

I'd feel less bad about killing a dog than killing a possum

The possum is a natural, innocent creature that lived harmlessly in the forest until humans bulldozed the forest down and stole its home

That dog on the other hand is foreign to the region, has a home, has someone who feeds it, and its owner also doesn't care if their dog roams around killing random innocent creatures

Random predators are innocent beings trying to eat because they're hungry. Roaming dogs are the pets of trashy people that just kill for fun

This! A neighbors dog jumped my six foot wooded fence and killed (for funzies) 13 of my precious hens… although I would have been devastated if it were a raccoon that did it.. I would’ve been able to understand better! The dog isn’t killing for food but for the chase! Anyway, we caught the dog and did not return it to the owners… my husband came home to kill the dog but I was traumatized and just couldn’t do it… I wish now I let him kill it in the spot! We sent it to the animal shelter and because it could not be adopted out as it killed my “livestock” they put it down as the owners did not claim the dog afterwards. I would kill those dogs if I were you! It’s not worth the heartache and they are on YOUR property!! They gotta go!

All sad but all also true. No one wants this, no one went looking for it. As an old farm boy we were raised to honor the life of livestock, put it ahead of our own interests as they were our responsibility, but that in the end they are farm animals, or pets as in this case. You owe them a quick, clean death if needed and nothing else.

No offense or criticism intended, but chances are the dog would have been less traumatized by being put down with a .22 in the back of the head than being taken to a shelter to be put down. These aren't thinking animals on a high level but they do recognize they are in a bad place. Take responsibility, in your case it is justice.

I've been meaning for years to get one of these for the neighbor's dogs, but they got hit by a car... Then they briefly had their son's girlfriend's horse... and he was making deposits in my yard. Then their daughter got older, got a pet, and I took her dog home a few times. He got hit by a car, too.
Some people should not own pets. It's not the 1970's anymore.

If a dog goes home with paint on it, IMO the owners are going to be agitated enough to either address the problem or address who they think did it. And then you can state your case and say you were trying to train the dog to stay off your property and not kill it. The other alternative.

For me cats are a whole nuther ballgame.
In my state they fall under no jurisdiction. Owners don't even have to get them rabies vaccines.

No collar, no tag, hangs out around my house all the time, it's feral to me.

I did kill what I found out was a mother one time. I happened to see one of her gray kittens in the shrubs on the side of my house. Where the mother must have had her nest. I trapped four of the gray kittens (guessing that is all there was) and called a local cat rescue place and they came and got them. I gave them fifty bucks for their cause.

Dogs get one chance for trespassing. We have an airhorn. I sound that off and usually they leave and don't come back, if they do out comes the Boomstick. If they are trying to get to my critters they don't get the airhorn first they get the Boomstick.

In need of advice. Pls no rude comments.
For three nights I’ve had something come into my yard trying to kill my animals. specifically chickens but i have goats including small babies also. I set up a camera and left the camera up on my phone and happened to wake up tonight to see a German shepherd in my yard. Went outside and it was actually three that I’ve seen roam my area before. Thankfully I keep my animals locked away at night except for one chicken that got out and they killed it. Anyway, when I went out there intending on scaring off or even dispatching, I couldn’t do it. I scared them off but I lost my nerve in actually dispatching them. If it were a wild animal like a raccoon like I initially thought that’s one thing but knowing it’s one of my neighbors pets is completely different for me. Obviously I won’t let them kill my animals tho so I’m just wondering if anyone on here has had to handle a situation like this? I shot at one that got a little too close to me but I missed and it ran off. I just know im gonna feel so guilty. I figured I’d call animal control but there doesn’t seem to be any in my area. My next line of action now is contacting the people who own these dogs. Thing is they don’t care what happens to them and have advised us in the past to shoot their dogs if they come in my yard. I’m in northeast Texas, jefferson area if anyone knows of any resources that’d be great. I have a LGD in training but it’s young and not in the same part of my yard where my chickens are.

Talk to your local animal control and make a complaint with them. That will cover you if you face the eventuality of having to kill the animal as we have had to do to neighbor's cats that decided to attack our chickens and kids in the past. Fortunately, Louisiana laws are weighted heavily towards livestock owners and any animal attacking livestock can be killed without repercussion. Just make sure you document any animal losses with photos if you can and call Animal control so they will have a record of the problem as well.

Shelters in my area are overflowing. They won’t take them unfortunately

Taking to a shelter if you can catch them is always a good idea but people should never shy away from killing animals that attack their flocks. Especially as killing a single animal that is part of a group will deter other members of the group from returning. Especially social animals like coyotes, dogs, and racoons.

Call and demand the county or Sheriffs department or animal control come get the dogs.You can be charged with animal cruelty under Federal law if you aren't good shot or if its not a clean kill ( a slow painful death) There's also the problem of where to bury 3 German shepherds.Have you ever dug a hole that big?
