I have three orps and want to add some color to my egg basket. So I’ve decided I’ll get a marans, an Easter egger, and an olive egger. I have a supplier picked out too! The only problem is that I DON’T want to brood any chicks. So I decided I let one of my hens raise them. My hens are a bit over a year old and I’ve been waiting soooo long for one of them to go broody. And it’s happening! One of them is sitting in the nesting box, all flattened out like a pancake! She didn’t even get up to roost tonight! I’m so excited!!!! Yes, of course I’ll wait for at least 20 days to make sure she is really broody before getting any chicks to put under her.

Will this really work, will she wake up one morning and think she hatched a bunch of eggs, if she is sitting on nothing or one or two fake eggs? Or will she attack them?

From what I’ve researched, if I wait a while to make sure she is serious and then slip some chicks under her one night she will ~probably~ take to them as if she’d hatched them herself. Right now she’s on 12 golf balls and 3(?) real eggs. I’m not removing the real eggs for a while just as to not disturb her

Still on the nest! I made a temporary box for my other two girls

My chicks will be hatching on June 3rd and I’ll go get them either that day or the next!!! Broody girl is still trucking along. It will be getting into the high 90s though, how can I keep her comfortable without breaking her broodiness?

Chicks are here! Now I wait until tonight to sneak them under broody girl
