It Begins With A Map... (Medieval RP)

Fleta cringed, but stopped herself from shying away as she answered, not acknowledging his remark, "I'd like to look through the books, Oswin's books that you and Peyton helped him with today." She bit the inside of her cheek, the pain helped keep her mind off Kenrick's arm around her shoulders.

Once the brothers left the stables, Oswin grinned to himself as he took a lantern and pulled the cloak off the bookcase. "Now, where to start?!" he said out loud as he started with the first tome on the top shelf and combed through the pages, but found nothing. No need to worry yet... there were plenty of books to go. So he moved onto the second book on the shelf, flipping through its pages as well, but again found nothing. Fairly soon, he was through the entire top shelf and had not yet found the map.

'You would, huh?" Kenrick said, his smirk growing a little wider. "You know, I'm keepin' an eye on those books tonight. Makin' sure no riff raff steal anything," he looked at Glenn as he made that statement and the young man's sausage-like fingers curled into a fist. "But maybe if you come by late tonight, Oswin doesn't have to know. Say round midnight? Course..." he let his hand slide down until it rested on her lower back, "...you'll owe me one."

Fleta swallowed, "Yes... I'll owe you, midnight... I'll, I'll be back then..." She said with a fake smile. She was having trouble speaking, her throat felt like it had closed, You knew this would happen eventually, the family is close to starvation, him or someone else... Fleta thought, trying to convince herself that this was the only way.

"That's my girl," Kenrick said, giving Fleta's torso a quick squeeze before finally releasing her.

A short time later, Petyon stood up and stretched his shoulders. "Guess it's time to go back out, Kenny."

"It's not here!" Oswin said angrily and threw the last book against the nearest horse stall, where it startled a few of the horses. "That girl must have it!" he said.

He took a few deep breaths as he climbed off the wagon, debating how to proceed. But it was getting late and there was no sense deciding on an empty stomach. He'd get something to eat first in the Inn and think it over. "Probably has it and doesn't even know!"

"Have what?" Peyton asked as the pair hurried into the stables again.

"Ah... one of the valuable books in Calhoun's collection," Oswin answered rather smoothly. "You boys keep an eye on these tonight. I'll be back soon enough," he said, then hurried out of the stable and toward the Fountain Inn.

Fleta almost slapped Kenrick, but held back, and give a slight laugh as if she liked it, "Well, I'll be seeing you later, bye..." She said, turning and walking out of the inn before he could see the look of revulsion on her face.

Christof's eyes flew open at the sound of the door closing, but he stayed perfectly still and gave no indication that he had woken. The room was dark, but a small amount of moonlight coming in from the window allowed him to see the silhouette of a man approaching the bed. He couldn't see Unwin's face, but knew enough that it wasn't Jem. Very slowly he moved his hand under his pillow where he had hidden a knife just for times like these. He had learned to keep his weapons close, closer even than the suitcase on the other side of the room. His hand closed firmly around it and he waited a moment longer for Unwin to get closer...

Unwin pulled out a length of leather cording to bind their wrists, as he reached the bedside. This is too easy, I should take 'find and retrieve' jobs more often. he thought, smirking in the darkness as he reached forward with the leather strap in hand...

Glenn followed the girl out of the Inn, followed by Kenrick's voice. "That's how you do it, Glenn! I'll have to teach ya, boy!" He felt his cheeks grow hot again, but managed to act like he hadn't heard Kenrick.

It seemed the rain was slowing down some, but it was still drizzling. He looked awkwardly at Fleta, shifting uncomfortably. "Want to come back to Ms Dotta's place for a few hours?" he invited, having no idea what to say about the encounter with Kenrick.

The brothers settled in near Oswin's wagon. "You think these things are valuable?" Peyton asked, picking up one of the books and flipping through the pages.

"Hmmm? ... oh... yeah, they must be." Kenrick replied, distracted by thoughts of Fleta.

When Unwin came within reach of his knife, Christof exploded from the bed as quickly as he could, hoping to catch the intruder off guard. He swung the weapon out with all his strength towards Unwin, aiming for his torso. "JEM, RUN!" He shouted her name at the same time, unsure if she was awake or not.

The noise startled Jem greatly and she rolled awkwardly off the side of the bed, unable to see anything at first. This wasn't the first time someone had attempted to get them during the night, but she didn't feel any more prepared this time compared to the first. "Chris, where are you?" She fumbled with the candle on the nightstand, trying to get some light in the room.

Fleta didn't look at Glenn as she answered in a hollow, empty voice, "Mother doesn't need me at home, so, yes... Do you mind if we stop by my house, though? I need to change, I am soaked..." She looked up at the slowly setting sun as they walked, the clouds were painted reds, pinks and purple, but the beauty was lost on Fleta.

"I don't mind," Glenn replied. "Hey Fleta," he said as they walked toward Fleta's home, "you want me to just pummel him?" For his bulk, he wasn't one to get into fights, but the way Kenrick treated Fleta just made his blood boil.

Oswin had been pacing near the fire in the common room of the Inn. The proprietor of the establishment had been able to tell him about the white haired girl. Apparently the girl's father was some big-shot knight and not someone Oswin was anxious to tangle with. Perhaps he could simply offer her more money for the books. Of course.. if she had already looked through them and found the map...

His ponderings were interrupted by a faint noise that seemed to be coming from above him. "Jem, Run!" Oswin paused his stride and strained his ears, trying to hear what was going on in the room above.

Fleta posed before answering, "I, I really appreciate all your help, Glenn, but if you helped me with this, he'd make your life a living-he** and... I won't have that happen to you, mine is already..." At that moment, the door to Fleta's house opened and her mother stood in the doorway, calling the short distance down the road to them, "Fleta! Fleta, who's that with you?! Did you find it? Fleta, did you find Calhoun's stash?!"
Fleta sighed, then answered, "This is Glenn, mum, we met up at old man Calhoun's horse. And no mum, there was nothing there, the man had no stash."
Her mother sounded disappointed when she next spoke, "Oh, well, come on in. Aiden found a rabbit, and the meat is not to soured!"
Fleta scowled, "I'll only be stopping by, mum." She said as they reached the small, dank house.
The mother frowned, "Ah... Oh hello, Glenn," she looked him up and down, as if making sure he was enough for her daughter.
