Of all the eggs, in all the incubators, in all the world...It finally happened to me!

I was setting eggs yesterday from a tray into the hatcher. When I hear POP...Sounded like a lightbulb blowing, I look around and realize the egg I just touched had a whole in it. Then the smell hit me...UGGGG.

The white smelly liquid had exploded all over ME!!! I jump up and start hopping around. EWWWWW,

I chuck the thing out the back door and hop around some more...AHHHHH... I barely touched the thing!

So I clean up and GENTLY place the rest in the bator. I think I will never get shipped eggs again!

But thats not all...

Im sleeping when suddenly I wake up....WHAT THE @(#$&$ IS THAT SMELL!!!!! I run down and open a bator and about pass out from the smell

...okay not really, but I seal that sucker up and run upstairs for the Vix Vapor Rub to put under my nose. Learned that from Partricia Cornwell!
So I am down stairs looking through two Sportsman Incubators for the culprit...Starting with the ones shipped, then the ducks the most obvious culprits..Nothing. So I start pulling one tray at a time and plucking any egg that looks slightly suspicious.

Finally I find that thing. It's one of my Cubalaya eggs and the top of the shell is entirely GONE! MIA! Nothing but the membran and inside is BLACK....EWWWW. So I cant get the dang thing out of the tray its stuck! So I have to transfer 47 eggs to another tray and get it outside...

So I learned my lesson..Ive never really been into the candling thing but I think I will now.

Whew! That is the worst STANK smell I know of that comes from anything chicken! I had one blow in my face a few weeks ago... GURG!!! Right now I have one in the bator that is stuck to the rack and I'm sure it is no good. The eggs are due to come out and rest tomorrow, so I am just crossing my fingers it holds till then... If not... well... that's what i get for gambling I guess.

I had one blow up in my face once. UGH!!! Not fun.... and unforgettable.

What do you mean, "the eggs are due to come out and rest."?
Mine stay in until they hatch, or it's obvious they aren't going to. Why would you 'rest' them? Wouldn't they just get cold and die?

Yes, I was wondering the same thing.

Well, bread dough--it rests--then you can cook it--I don't think it is quite the same thing.

Re exploding eggs. Did you all that have had them not smell them at all before they went?

I have had two eggs go rotten, but I could smell them in the room where my incubators are. And then, Huckleberry, my egg sniffing dog, much like a bomb sniffing dog, indicated which ones were suspect.

They can explode with no warning?

I assume she meant they will be taken from the turner and put in the hatcher, not to be touched or moved until they hatch!

One of my broody hens had a rotten egg explode. I had no idea until I smelled the grossest smell EVER!! She was in the BACKyard and I was in the FRONTyard and it completely permeated the air all around my house!! Ugh! I can't imagine actually being doused with the contents of one of those things!!!
