It has been decided. We're going to import birds from Europe.

And the possible lethal butt gene is NOT happening here. I don't want to have to crack open eggs with thousands of dollars worth of dead chicks inside.

It's going to happen at some point (the dead chick in the shell thing) simply because they don't all make it.

I would have thought that the breeders you are getting the birds from would have told you if there was a lethal butt gene, presumably they have told you of the lethal short leg gene in the Japs, so if they've not said about the butt gene it seems unlikely there is one in this variant.

Don't change your mind just cos some of us old fuddy-duddies don't like buttless Japs, some of us old fuddy-duddies don't like chocolate orps either, if you keep listening to us you'll end up buying a cat

true-you will never please everyone on BYC.

you should get the birds you like because that is what is going to keep you interested in them.i wouldn't even think about making ALOT of money with chickens unless they lay gold eggs.

you should do whatever makes you happy.

Put me on your buyers' list for Standard Barnevelders if you're serious. The gene pool in the US is terribly limited and diluted. Love to have some REAL Barnies that lay a DARK Brown egg!

What she said.
If you are going to go to all of the hassle and expense of importing birds, don't pick a breed you aren't REALLY in love with.

By the way, when you find out what all is involved in this(expense, paperwork, etc.) would you mind posting it on here? I may be getting ready to do this myself if the cost isn't too astronomical and I can find a SLAMMIN'(and I mean they have to be spot on) breeder of what I am looking for. I want to see if this is even a feasible option for me.

I know somebody who brought in one dozen FBCM hatching eggs from France. He claims it cost him $1200. 8 hatched. They were not as dark as some eggs in North America. But what are you going to do? send them back?
I know somebody who is going to bring hatching eggs in from England. I didn't get all the details but they told me they had to make sure the eggs were wrapped in aluminum foil so the scanners wouldn't kill the embryo. ????
They didn't think it was going to be that difficult or expensive.

Somebody in my area has the old type Barnevelders. The true Barnevelder. She isn't selling any of her birds. I don't blame her.
