It has begun

Our ducks totally tore our garden up. I've heard the chickens won't do that. This will be our first year with chickens and garden so we will see. Fingers crossed.

Just don't plant zucchini and other squash in neighboring hills and then not label what is in which hill if there is any chance the chickens can get in and eat the seeds twice, unless you want lots and lots of zucchini...

Now just waiting on my 16 chicken eggs to hatch although I have a sinking feeling my 4 olive eggers aren't fertile. Bummer

these guys are escape artist! Tiny little bugger jumped clear out of the container I put them in to hatch to keep them away from the chicken eggs. My chickens did nothing but lay down and wobble for the first several hours after hatch.

I'm planning on putting in a large garden this year and I've been trying to come up with ways to limit chicken damage when the are free ranging. I'm going to get a couple cattle panels and trellis anything I can up to keep the veggies out of their reach as much as possible. I've seen some interesting ideas on pintrist on using trellis' for melons, squash and pumpkins as well as other plants.

When it's time to yank the squash vines out of the garden in the fall, I don't compost them or let them tangle in the tiller, the chickens devour the vines just like they do the squash.

anybody having some more hatch?

I'm in the doldrums part of the hatch....just turning and watching the bator temps and humidity.

the 7 I got at road side stand. I added 2 of my own. the white was a quitter, but a tan and the green one hatched. one of the dark browns has a pip. they are due the 20th.
