I went to lock up my chickens for the night and the peafowl egg that was due to hatch was already hatched ! Now what?

The B Orp was stepping on it so we brought it in and put it in a brooder... I have no food tonight

When do I give water?

When do I give food ( game start right?)

Temps in brooder ?

I am freaking out ! The help I have gotten has been a godsend I just need a little more... thanks

I believe it will be okay tonight without food or water. They can usually go a day or two before they need any nourishment. I would offer water tomorrow, if it were me. Good luck with your new baby.

For some reason some tend to hatch early. I was like you caught off guard when mine hatched. Give sugar water for the first 24 hrs. If you have chick feed on hand that will work fine. You can add crumbled up boiled egg yolk a couple times a week for the first few weeks to up the protein.

The hard part is to make sure it starts eating on its own. You really need a small chick to teach it. They don't learn like chicks. They have to be taught to eat and drink. You really have to watch it to make sure it does eat and drink.

Also they don't like to be alone. So I would definately try to put a chick with it. It will bond highly with you and cry everytime you are out of its sight, at least mine did, lol.

I learned to hard way not to leave them on high protein game bird food. So I really don't reccomend it over a month to six weeks. I am having leg issues with one of mine due to high protein.

Hope I helped a little bit.

Thank you ! Thank you! The chick is chirping and bobbing it's head in between napping. It opens it's cute little eyes if it hears someone talking to it. It hatched a few hours ago...it's toes are curled is that normal?

Thanks again everyone for your advice, I appreciate it greatly.

Good advice so far , yes suger in water first days, dip its beak in the water, boil eggs yolks , see if it will eat from your finger. they like the egg yolks, getting them to eat and drink first think.

For the feet, u may need to make a shoe, let see if it open up the first day, if not link to shoes or pm me for more help.

deerman,

thank you for the link. I appreciate your help. The peachick toes look less curled this morning and it is walking some, peeping a lot. I put sugar water in brooder and dipped it's beak ..will do again soon. Will boil eggs today as well.

Thank you again for your help.

The ones I just got won't eat egg yolks. So far they haven't touched their starter either. Any suggestions?

If the toes have an obvious KINK and is staying 'kinked' when it is standing up, it is curly toe and really best to treat it ASAP as the cartilage in their toes start to harden pretty rapidly- within a few days. The sooner it is treated the shorter they need to be shoed, and the longer the wait the longer they have to be shoed- basically to force the already semi-hardened bones to 'grow out' in the correct alignment.

The usual info for peaegg incubation is 28 days however for a lot of people in the south it is 26 days. It's always 26 days for me here in southern California. No matter if in incubator, under hen or under peahen.

If chick seems slow to eat or "fussy", just moisten the feed and call them to it. Some peachicks kind of don't eat well on their own, only becoming excited about food when a mother is food calling or it sees another peachick(or any chick) eating. So watch for that.. Also be sure to watch brooder temps.. peachicks seem to have problems with getting too cold or too hot. But they need a WARM spot.. 95-98 with cooler spots also though.

The egg yolk are only fed the first few day to get them started eating. Peachicks just dont eat as much as a chicken chicks.

You sure they are not eating ? or just not much.

After the first day if the feet, are still not normal used the shoe.
