It is Not So Wrong to want a Bactrian Camel

It probably isn't good to buy a cheap camel, but I did find some reasonably priced ones.

The person with the camel (the camel is hugely tall) told me he only needs TWO flakes of hay a day. Isn't that amazing? Aren't camels economical?

And gets a little grain just so he does not feel left out when the (little tiny) horses (that eat six flakes a day) get fed.

My mom said years ago that camels are MEAN!

I don't think I would want one.

But they are cute.

I think the mean camel thing started in Mongolia. Since a camel can open its mouth really wide, parents would say to kids, 'you better stop beating up on your brother, or I will let the camel eat your head'.

You may think I am kidding. Ok. Some camels are indeed mean, if that means spitting at people or bellowing whenever anyone comes near them. I've always interpreted the bellowing to mean, 'Oh no, here comes a human to make me work or beat me'.

But I think they are 'mean' because they are either not disciplined enough or get roughed up too much (see kid slapped on plane thread).

The lady with the camel the other day, said that camels are smarter than horses or even dogs. 'PLUS', she says, 'They have a true view of reality'.

Ok, I admit at that my mouth was hanging open. 'Reality?' I said. 'YES. Reality. What I mean is, they don't show fear of a dixie cup in the grass like a horse'.

Oh. I made a mental note: Camels do not show fear of dixie cups in grass.

When I complemented her on her camel's good deportment, she said, 'He didn't get this way by me feeding him SUGAR CUBES, you know'.

'Oh, do you have to get after your camel sometimes?' Yes, that was the whole point.

I could start a thread about how people just don't discipline their camels any more. Danged liberal camel owners.

I would like a miniature elephant!! They don't have miniature elephants you say? Well... WHY NOT.. Wouln't that be cute if they never got bigger than the size when they are born and much more economical to keep. Okay, if I had to pick an animal that exist now.. I would say a Camel and I would name him Clyde.

Considering elephants don't get to breeding age until about 10 or 12, it would take a lloonngg time to selective breed them.

Welsummerchicks, there are CHEAP camels? Are people just selling them cheap like horses? I didn't know we had so many camels here in the US.

BTW, I did see a Bactrian camel doing dressage on Dressage Unlimited when it was on RFD TV. Since they don't trot, they just did extended and collected paces instead. The extended canter stride on that thing was just HUGE, probably covered at least 20 feet.

mom'sfolly :

Y'all are evil. Now I have to go tell dh that I want a Bactrian camel. I don't know how I'm going to work that on my suburban lot.
