I was afraid of catching one of my hens too when I set my trap, I never did, but I was always intently listening for the door of the trap to slam shut so I could rush out there to make sure it wasn't a hen. Funny!

I went to town today...and bought sardines in oil...and whitefish filets. I tied the fish to the back of the trap...and doused it in the sardine oil..and tossed in a piece of sardine. This way...when it tries to get the fish, it will have to tug, thus setting off the trap.Wish me luck. Oh, and I wont trash the mink. My sons friend wants it. He will freeze it untill Mink season opens. Im headed out in a few, to check the coop doors, and traps.

The silly thing is...Im not sure HOW that hen got in there. She had to belly crawl to get in...I hade to pull her out by the tail! She REALLY wanted that tuna. So far...no mink....but Im patient!

Do you have too many pets around to use a leg hold trap? These can be boiled easily and can be set outside the henhouse, so the hens can't get caught. Dare you try it in your area? Or enlist the help of someone who traps for profit, I bet they could catch it more easily with all that experience! Even a wire snare might work in this case. For mink we always used sardines.
