It's going to be super cold.

It is still misting. We had about 7" of rain. It is overcast and 62•. A week from now it will be 95•! It got down to the 50s last night. I had taken the heat off of the week old guineas and out the 6week old pea n with them. Big mistake. I had very cold birds in the utility room this morning. I thought I lost the guineas this morning! I turned the heat lamp back on and I wrapped the pea in a towel and held him until he warmed up. Now everyone is fine. I won!t do that again!
Yea my wee peas that have started roosting are soaked but seem to be ok even though it is 70 degrees, the younger hatchlings still get locked up in the brooder box at night so they were fine, most of my sitting peahens have lost their eggs, i found every one of them standing over their flooded nest as the eggs floated all over the place, finely had to totally mess up the areas to get them to stop trying to sit water instead of eggs, poor girls and most were due to hatch in a few days.

Glad you caught your wee ones in time, when they get cold (hyperthermic) it stops their digestion process as well as other things so they can not metabolize energy need to keep them warm and they can die pretty fast.

PS we are at 5 inches so far and it is still pouring down

I fed Peep some mealy worms after he warmed up. He loves them! While I was feeding him the baby guineas that were in the brooder with him are the mealy worms out of my hand too! That was a first!

You mean you never tried to get them to eat out of your hands? all my keets and even many of the grown guineas will eat out of peoples hands, easy to teach them when they are little, i love the noise they make when they get treats.

there are here to stay i guess cause we find at least one a year on our place, all because of a storm serge from hurricane IKE years ago, it drove them inland and then they got trapped in some of our reservoirs, now when they hatch out somewhere on the reservoir some make their way to our ponds

Lot of folks are moving out this way, and lots of property being sold along this reservoir so it is just a matter of time before we hear about someone finding a gator nest up in here, i don't mind them

there are lots of good eats from that reservoir, ducks, crawfish.gator, bass, blue cats, brim even got some river otters but darn fool people will end up killing what is left case some folks around here will shoot anything even if it ain't bothering nothing
