I'll get my first eggs in in Feb and most of the rest in Mar. And then from there hatch my own til Fall. Sort, cull, get more eggs to get the lines I want to work with over winter... and do it again. Weeeeee... Stop?

Hey all, we are first time keepers (starting in the spring anyway) In Northwest Ohio its not warm until late April. I was thinking of Buckeyes (being an Ohio boy) and Americanas

suggestions on an order date?

I went out and asked the three week old chicks running around on frozen ground, when it's time to have chicks. They said they liked it out there with their mommas.

poultrypatch----was sooo sad to get home from work today and discover you're not NY state! :-( all my hopes and dreams shattered......I have noisy keets too!

I've come to realize that hatching chicks is more expensive than ordering.... unless I continue hatching my own for a LONG time.

I just think that incubating / hatching is a lot of fun.

If I weren't hatching my own, I'd probably be ordering the McMurray Ornamental layers with 2 or 3 White Face Black Spanish added in.

That is why I ordered my layers, well future layers.

This morning I placed my spring pullet order to Cackle for 25 Black Australorps and 25 Buff Orpingtons for $90+$15 shipping. $105 for 50 female chicks isn't too bad. I should get them the middle of Feb.

I will keep 10 Aussies and 5 Orps. The rest will be sold starting at 3 weeks old. If I can sell out by the time they hit 8 weeks old I will make enough to pay for the entire order, their up-keep, and a couple extra bags of feed.

Depending on how they sell, I may make another order come April.

thetajmahalcoop !!! I too was sooooo sad !!! I kept looking at your addy and it just wouldn't sink in. Then I realized you were NY and when you saw Rochester.......
I do have realatives SOMEWHERE in Rochester, New York if that helps ??? LOL I have 7 keats.....4 lavs, 2 pearl and 1 that ???? looks like he's a dark charcoal. I absolutely love them ! Mine are in with some chicks that are a wk older then they are. About 18 wks. Keats wait til the last minute to go in for the night. When I went out at 5:15 PM to lock them up they stuck their heads out the pop door and started to scream at me. I think they were telling me it's darn cold out and I should shut the door for them !! :)) How many do you have and have you ever hatched any eggs ? Going to order an incubator next week.
