It's puffball mushroom season!

I don't remember what kind they were, it was too long ago. I threw the book away, & later wished I'd have saved it & sent it to the author with my hospital & ambulance bill. The book had a cross reference to check look-alikes, but none looked close, so we ate them. Nowadays my shrooms come from a can ONLY!

We love puffballs, but have found only one so far this year. I sliced it, dipped it in egg and then Italian Panko bread crumbs and the slices were delicious and crispy. Just yesterday, porcinis appeared around our pines just like they did last year. They look like light brown hamburger buns when newly emerged. I trim off the greyish underside, slice the "bun" and freeze for use all winter long. Warning: my hands turn almost purple after handling them, but the discolor cleans off with soap and scrubbing.
