I've got a coon! Help please!

I don't have electricity running out there, but could learn how to do this. I've read several posts suggesting it.

Electric is a good deterrent. I don't know about solar but many of the ranchers here don't use solar. I have electricity to my barn so the power for the electric comes from the barn. I have seen coons on my game cameras but they have not messed with my birds. I protect my birds the best way I know and it drives me a little nuts when other people don't. A neighbor had bought some birds from me a few times. She wanted to free range them which is ok, but apparently she didn't watch them close enough as predators got to know she would let her birds out and eventually the predators got all of her birds. Finally I refused to sell her anymore birds. I haven't seen or heard from her since. I let my birds out but most often this time of year they might come out briefly but go back into their pens because they have more shade in them. I have dispatched a few predators. I had a conversation with our wildlife officer. It's not illegal and the predators aren't endangered or threatened. It is illegal to shoot birds of prey.

I've had excellent luck using Duke's Dog Proof Traps -

I've baited with marshmallows and sunflower seeds - I have also put a small dish of water next to the trap for them. These traps work very well - I've heard others having success with the wire cage/trip traps as well. If you can get electricity out there, I definitely second the notion of a hot wire. I wasn't able to get electric out to mine either - so I had to do with trapping/shooting.

Duke dp traps work great caught 3 in them this year.

We set up a line of them recently and caught 9 coons in a little more than a week. Then we found out that even if they are "nuisance coons" we aren't allowed to trap until "trapping season" and we are only allowed to kill them if we see them harassing our animals. So we'll be running a trap line for them all trapping season so we don't get in trouble. We'll be talking to our neighbors to see if anyone wants them to eat and how to skin them in the meantime.

Because of the risk of rabies, I wouldn't be processing any of them for food!

.22 and a live trap work great. Put the shot right between the eyes. They will convulse wildly but that is due to brain death. In less than 30 seconds they will be still and ready to be disposed of.

I would love to set up a deep marine solar charged battery and electric fence but have not worked up the funds or know how quite yet.

My neighbor knows of a lot of old-timers in the area who would love to eat any coons, possums, groundhogs, muskrat we could send their way. I wouldn't eat it myself.

Our season is from the 28th of November until the 28th of February with a 4 coon limit per person per night. Fortunately, there are enough adults on the property that a 8 trap line would be covered if they fill up in one night.
