You need to use the kind with the 'mother' in it, it can contain minerals and organisms that may be beneficial to ones health.
Some swear by it to cure everything from flu to warts, some swear against it. There is little quantifiable evidence either way.

Even pasteurized ACV will help keep water from growing green things due to acidic nature...but don't use it in metal waterers as that same acidity will hasten corrosion.

You can buy it at some feed stores and I bought it on Amazon.com. I paid about $18 for a gallon and since you only put a tablespoon or so in a container of water, it lasts quite a while. I just usually toss in a small dollop into the water every day. It helps the water stay clean, and is better for them.
Pasteurization removes the "mother" from the apple cider vinegar and so it removes all the helpful parts of it. Humans should be consuming the non pasteurized too, so you can also find it in health food stores for humans, even GNC carries it, but it's pricey there.
I like doing this for my chickens. It's a small thing, but I think it makes for much healthier chickens.

I was so excited to find in our biggest of three stores locally!! We live on an island in SE Alaska. It's hard to find a lot of stuff!! I got the right stuff and is already added and I am using it personally too!! Good stuff!! Thanks all!! Our babies have it added to water. We have 14 total. 13 hens and one oops but beautiful loved roo which we are glad for his help protecting the ladies. He is 5 weeks younger than the older girl (older girls are 18 weeks in 2 days. Peekaboo( roo) and the younger girls are 13 weeks. He shows respect while trying to be in charge of the older girls. The younger 5 girls his age are well wrangled by him. Lol

Thank you so much for the information! Nothing is cheap on this island. Lol. I was so shocked to see it right where all the other vinegar was that I had to grab it. Lol our babies health is well worth the 8 bucks for a 32 ounce bottle. In fact I'm gonna try it myself! I love vinegar anyway. Lol thanks again!!!
