Last night I needed to check my hennies-- I hate to bother them at night, but we got stuck out past dark and I wanted to quickly count them off to make sure they were there. All accounted for; however, this morning...I noticed a strange thing in the -Thankfully clean- bedding under the roost. A lovely big brown Brahma egg! Has anyone else had the experience of an egg being laid from the roost? Also, given that it didn't land in any droppings and doesn't have any cracks, I'm assuming it's safe to eat? I'm hoping this is a freak occurrence and not something to expect to be habit.

I came on here today to research this! In the last week two of my hens have started laying from the roost bar (dropping eggs several feet into a line of poo) every night without fail ! And now it looks like one of the hens is eating an egg on occasions. Very odd. They've been laying just fine for weeks in the boxes :-/

Apparently it's not that uncommon, and I know once they start eating raw eggs they'll crack their own and eat them. I don't know how to break that habit, no pun intended, other than maybe to try and get eggs out quickly, and enrich protein and calcium sources. And cracked or super poopy eggs you could cook up and give back to the hens--- that might help. Chickens are funny ladies, aren't they?
