I've Killed It! It Never Stood a Chance! Graphic Photos

I'm no houseplant ID expert, but it looks like some kind of bromeliad (kinda like hostas; most are tropical I think.) Don't give up til every speck of green is gone. I'm sure all my plants croak because I'm an inconsistant waterer - famine and flood, poor things. Good luck!

it takes some time to re-grow. but if you would like to spruce it up a little go ahead and clip the dead/dying leaves off. just the leaf stem though, no further down on the plant.

i used to save my former boss's house plant (same type) she had in her office. took them home for a few weeks and they would go back to her to try and kill them again if i didn't keep on her to water them.

i also found that giving the house plant a little jolt of tea is good for them. so if you drink that and have the leftover tea bag steep it one more time and pour the cooled off water in the soil.

When cutting off, do you mean cut all the way to the stalk or pull the entire piece of stalk off with it?

Luckily, the dogs don't seem to care about the plants...but it's a possibility to give it to the poodle to make him stop barking!

No, I won't really give it to him...

Actually famine or flood is better than the "oh it's Monday I have to water" approach. Good drainage is the key! I have been a plant pro for many years- it's a tropical born diffenbachia, and poisonous as all get out. No children or pets allowed to nibble. Can survive the low light of winter if watering is kept low, so the roots don't rot.

Holy cow, I just counted the years! Since 1988.

I have lots of books too. Any questions, I'll look it up for you if I don't know.

just under where the bottom of the leaf connects into the stem should do it. the next leaf will grow from that stem, so you don't want to pull or cut the whole stem down to the base of the plant/soil line or you would really kill that section of it.

i'm hoping i'm helping you and not confusing you.

Just cut the dead/dying leaf off where it meets the main stem. If they all have to go, cut the top part of the stem of and root it. The remaining stem will sprout bilaterally, it's apical dominance.

Several of the "main" leaves are yellow all the way to the dirt. Do I just leave those since it would make the other leaves fall apart from each other?

It looks a LITTLE better minus the completely brown leaves. I watered it again and it should be fertilized from the spikes in there. Will that be fine?

Thanks for all the help!

keep it out of the sunlight, and keep it where you have it in the picture...that would be what I'd do. Mind you, I have a MASSIVE peace lilly (1.5 metre diametre, last time I checked) and I never seem to water it enough.
Looks like I'm gonna be breaking my back someday soon trying to fit it into a bigger pot

...aw, its worth it though...
The new leaves are what matters mostly.
