We have two hens we bought (our first two) that are just pet quality, but they have leg mites. They have been getting worse the last week or so (really scaly and white bumps coming up). We have been using WD-40 on them with no improvement whatsoever, like I said, they are getting worse. Is ivermec what you guys that have had this problem found to work the best? I have the 1% ivermec for cattle and swine, do I just put 2-3 drops down their throats, or what? We dont mind trying vaseline on the legs, in fact we did start it yesterday but I am wondering if the WD-40 didnt work, will vaseline? Do I need to try something from the inside out? And do I need to treat all the other birds that have been in with them? Thank you

when my freerangers got leg mites I just went and bought a big jar of vasaline. I coated their legs with it everyday and within a week they were fine. I have heard you can also use wd40 but I dont like the idea of putting that on my birds. the idea is to suffocate the mites. It does take some time but the vasaline works. I only treated the ones that got the mites the rest were fine.

I'd be leery of dosing ivermec..unless you call vet. for dosage(maybe a couple drops in their water?), afraid too much would kill em.

I agree with the vasoline until then.

I will just stick with vaseline then...what do you guys think about dusting their legs and shanks real good with hi-yield poultry dust, then putting vaseline over that? It would smother them, plus keep that dust in contact with mites....any thoughts?
