Ivermectin or Ivomec for Scaly Leg Mites

The 1% cattle ivemectin I have is not water soluble.

Then it is not saline based. Saline is just some sort of a weak salt water solution that is the carrier and diluent to achieve the correct mg/cc solution. If its mixed in water it has to be soluble in water.

Yeah it's a drench and works as an injectable. The .08% concentration gives a lot more safety margin for error.

This is in reply to the post from Fairview01:

Thank you for the response. The rest of my flock looks fine, but I read in many places that they are highly contagious and that the whole flock should be treated, but I'm glad to hear that it's not necessarily going to spread to the rest of them. I think I will try treating the rooster that is affected and then just keep a close eye on the rest of my birds.

How difficult is it to give a chicken an injection? I have given dogs shots before, but have never tried it on a bird.

Chickens are extremely thin skinned. Because of that I dont trust myself to do a SubQ injection on a chicken that has decided to go into a panic and start flogging me with its wings. I just turn them upside down and using a short insulin needle inject it into the breast IM. Done before they even realize they've been upside down and I know it's in them and not in me. Vaccinated myself with a goodly amount of black leg when I was doing cattle in my younger days.

I think all of the 1% cattle stuff is a propylene glycol mix, not saline.

I know very well what saline is. ;) Curiously, what injectable drugs are made with saline?

diluent to achieve the correct mg/cc solution
And I know all about diluents and mg/ml and wish more people understood it. :th

True

The 1% injectable can be used topically too. I tried it and verified that it's effective.

Good stuff for people that don't mind ordering it.

A lot of the meds that are reconstituted the liquid is saline usually.

I have an inside track on cost and product. My daughter is a practicing vet. Too bad she's not an avian vet. That would be sweet for me.

That is exactly why I dont talk about how much to give. Push come to shove I may discuss mg/kg required but it's up to them to figure out how much to give. Giving 1/10 of something at a concentration of 50mg/ml may be therapeutic but that same dose at 200mg/ml could be fatal. From the forum its obvious a lot of people do not read labels in their entirety or could make change without a computer telling them what it is.

Dont know what happened to other post. Too late and too tired to be concerned.

I will give people a dose if they tell me exactly what product they have, as in how many mg per ml, then it's easy, just look up the dose in one of the formularies, and do the math. I'm pretty anal about such things.

The weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2, times dose in mg/kg, divide by the number of mg/per ml.

Ivermectin is used to treat parasites in humans also so imo discussing withdrawal periods on eggs is a non issue for me.
I agree with you @Fairview01, I wouldn't toss the eggs for myself, however my husband suffers from CMT (Charcot Marie Tooth) and we have 3 grandchildren under 2 yrs of age.
