Whether it's used for someone who may need it or not.. doesn't mean I will ever willingly eat poison. Some people feed them back to their animals.

he rest of my flock looks fine, but I read in many places that they are highly contagious and that the whole flock should be treated,

SLM are invisible to the naked eye... so all you can see of them is the evidence they have been there for a LONG time. Others may have it and not showing SYMPTOMS yet.

How old is your rooster? Can you post a pic? Scales on legs do get old. Sometimes it is easy to mistake those for SLM. But SLM looks like a keratin growth coming out from under the scale.

I was dreading trying the smothering method because my chickens aren't used to being held or picked up.

Hence the reason I suggested doing so after dark with a flashlight. It makes a HUGE difference! When my flock was 82 strong, most were not tame.

I'm glad to see other folks sharing their experiences and personal preferences!
