I am so lost as what to do for my dogs heartworms. I cannot afford the treatment from the vet , I have not go any x rays done but from my dogs symptoms I believe he is pretty far advanced he is a 9 year old boxer . I have read that ecenacia goldenseal , milk thistle ,vitamin e and oregano oil work which I have been giving one of each 3 Times a day for the last few days and it seems to help his coughing stops for a few hours after each dose I also ordered black walnut pills and I have the ivomec for cattle I am just scarred to give it to him . Will it kill him if the heartworm are adults?

You really need to find a vet. Maybe you can contact your local humane society to see if there's any programs to help with the treatment, or if there's a low cost vet in your area. I love boxers, 9 years old is getting old for one. It needs proper treatment, there must be someone that can help out with you to afford the treatments.

heartworm med only kills adult heartworms. However it sounds like your boxer is 1) an older dog and 2) likely has a very heavy wormload. Vet treatment is the only option. Rapid dieoff of the worms can lead to an infection in the heart, clogging of the heart, or even dead heartworms circulating in the blood stream to the lungs and other organs. Treatment needs to be precise and closely monitored to minimize the risk of death.

Another thing I just thought of for you to look into is called care credit. You can apply ahead of time online to see if you qualify but it is basically a low interest credit card for medical care.
