Jacin's Poultry 2022

Polish are going to a new home on Saturday.

One pheonix has hatched a clutch. 6 hatched, 4 made it past day 1. 1 other had pipped but failed and 4 never pipped, so a total of 4 out of 15. Not a great total, but it's fine for this year

McMurray order has had some issues. Out of a 19 (17 ordered and 2 extras), I have lost 5 within a day. 1 was a doa, and the other 4 were all the same breed after being unpacked and checked on. Friend is a bit bummed as those were what she was really wanting.

I'm thinking it's likely just extra stress as the breed was one they culled and thus probably went through another round or sorting while they grabbed the ones they needed for their new flock before filling orders.

One of the 2 remaining is a little.... off. It's just not very smart compared to the rest of the chicks. I keep having to show it the water and food.
I lost your thread! Aaargh! So much has happened! I will reread through, but curious on what breeds you ordered from McMurray? Sorry you lost a few during shipping. 🙁

Chicks were cleaned and sorted. 3 tubs still:

1: Keeping/growing out
2: Currently for sale or need to post for sale
3: Sold, have yet to be moved.

The Onyx are outside now with a pheonix pair. The pair and one of the Onyx are going with the tub 3 chicks on Wednesday to their new home.

I'll try to post later, I have a pair of chicks thar seem to have been sexlinked from my pen

New babies came and some birds left.

Polish got a new home and some assorted birds (including a pheonix trio) went to a different home as well.

These things came in the mail.

They're all over the place. Some don't have any butts, some have these weird feather clumps on their faces and some have both. What the heck are these things?! Tumors? Did someone cut their tails off?

😂🤣

Jk, I know what they are, but do you?

There are also splash marans scattered around in the bin too. Those guys have feathered legs though

2 stories for the price of 1:

1) So these chicks do a new thing I've never noticed before when they're in the dark alone. They flare their wings out like a broody mama, and then lay on the ground as flat as possible so they look like they're bowing. They lay still until they think they're safe, and then shuffle forwards a few steps and stop again, never rising. The funniest thing I've ever seen, I might try to get a picture tomorrow night if it happens. The Cornish bantams and one mosaic/mosaic mix were pretty good at this. The others... not so much. But I have never seen this before in any birds I've had.

2) My mystery pullet (thinking a game bantam) is absolutely nuts at bedtime. It's dark, so obviously it's somewhat scary, I understand that. Most of the birds lay there and accept their fate when I grab them. Some cry and flap and kick before accepting fate.

She, however, screams. Screams loud enough I'm sure she's got a 3rd lung or something helping make this volume that probably woke the neighborhood up. She's flying around the pen like a freaking finch would, making the rest inside the house panic and flee back into the run. And then a 2nd time before I shut them in so it doesn't happen a 3rd time.

She gets out and is running through the chicken trailer park, in pitch darkness, before I finally grab her enough to tuck her into my stomach and muffle the screams still coming from this teeny little thing as we get back into the coop.

I guarantee that the coyotes will be nearby tonight, and I'm praying no one snuck out and got left behind. I didn't see anyone, but my eyesight isn't as good as a predator in the dark.
