This is Jack. Jack is a jerk. He tries to fly in my face and stalk me and my youngest son. Here's my questions: the lady I got him from 10 or so months ago said he's a Spalding and is 3 years old. I read Spaldings don't breed true and that's why all the chicks I got from him were Black Shoulder. #1. Is he a Spalding? Or what is he? #2. What could I breed him to so I don't just get Black Shoulder chicks? #3. Is what breed he is the reason he is such a nasty jerk?

He lost his train last month and is growing in his new one right now.

See Jack? Jack is very low Spaulding, very low. Jack is a jerk because someone made a pet out of him and imprinted him making him unafraid of humans. Jack is protecting his breeding territory. Jack will always be this way because Jack is a jack___. Jack is a beautiful Black Shoulder. Jack will make Black Shoulder chicks as long as he is bred to another BS or split BS hen. Enjoy Jack or do what the last owner did and pass your problem off to another unsuspecting person. I had a Jack, his name was Ron. Ron is now a beautiful BS mount on someone's wall.

LMAO! :lau
Love the picture!
Jack has no end claws, we didn't notice until we got him home. :( I don't think I'd give him to someone else or they'd even want him, but if he doesn't shape up... I hear peacock tastes just like pheasant. :gig

Also how can you spend time with your birds without the males seeing you as a threat later? We used to have an India Blue Peacock he wasn't friendly but wasn't mean either. I have 20 peachicks right now and I don't know if I've already done some damage...

This bird is also split white (white feather in the wing ... white throat .... white eyes in the train) ... that's why the wing is half gray and half BS iridescent.

I offer raw peanuts as a treat, I don't try to touch them or pet them. As long as they fear and respect you you shouldn't have any problems. Peas are like kids and they are all different and have different personalities. Some will never get within arms reach of you and some will ask for attention. If you want one for a pet that you can hold and pet make sure it is a hen but be aware, they will turn into bee-itches toward other birds and will rule the roost. I have three like that and I have to let them free-range in the latter part of the breeding season because they just don't get along in a pen. One nice thing is that they raise their chicks to be very calm and friendly.

That's very helpful! Thank you! Loving the pictures! :)

I had one like that too. He was an adult BS when I purchased him, and the previous owners didn't tell me anything about it, and it wasn't breeding season. He was the only one I let free range. I carried a plastic leaf rake with me and gave him a little dose of his own medicine when he tried to attack. It worked to a certain degree. I ended up selling him for a low price, but told the owners that he could get aggressive during mating season. They called a few days later saying he jumped on their son. I reminded them that I told them he was aggressive. Last I heard he wasn't aggressive any longer because he had no hens and was free ranging on their farm.

That's why I'm wondering if it's a common breed problem. Do Black Shoulders tend to be aggressive? :idunno
