Jan. 21st hatch day! I have chicks! Pics Added pg 12!

I never thought I'd even think about getting a silkie but they are great for going broody. So I might get just 1 or 2 for that purpose!

Pekin bantams are also excellent broodies

thats what i hear and i didnt know that about sussex i would like one of my chickens to go broody once just to have to experience and to see a mother hen rear chicks by herself

well, my orpington rejected her chick... maybe cause it was the only one? She started pecking at its head hard, maybe trying to kill it, don't know... but anyway, the chick is in the brooder right now. Maybe she'll like this next batch of chicks better. If so, I'll be sure to get lots of pics :O)

That's what my hen did to all of her chicks

well then, I guess I'll probably have to brood all my chicks, whether it's incubated under a hen or not. She did well with incubating the eggs before and is still doing well with these ones. They candled well this morning. I'd much rather have a hen doing all the work than to have to use an incubator.

Yes that would be nice, I don't think I would freak out as much!

So far so good! Everything is going great. I just wish time would go a little quicker. The hardest thing I have had to face so far is keeping my almost 4 yr old away from the incubator. Having to wait 21 days from time of setting to hatch is not the easiest thing to understand from a child's eyes. She really wants the eggs to hatch, NOW!

My daughters birthday is Jan 27. Her party is the 30th. That should be fun trying to deal with a buch of people up in my house with (hopefully) week old fuzzy butts!

oh, but won't it be a fun learning experience for those kids! Just will have to keep an eye on them, make sure none of them try to be too friendly with the chicks. You know kids... I'll be having my brother and his 5 yo daughter up that week also. She'll just love those baby chicks, I'm sure

May I join? I set 36 eggs on the 2nd. There are a few of the following breeds:
BCM, Ameraucana, RIR, and some mutt chickies that my DS wanted to hatch out.

I ended up setting a few more than I expected too!

15 quail eggs
1 pekin duck egg
25 Barred rock and barred rock cochin cross eggs.
1 chantecler egg
and 1 black sumatra egg.

Incubator is over full!
