Welcome to all of you I have not personally mentioned in my replies... I will be getting a list together with all of us in it, how many eggs we set and when they are due to hatch... We can keep better track of who is hatching at an specific time...

An update from me...

This morning will make day 2 for me... Temps and humidity has been really stable until this morning.. Humidity is starting to go down a bit but it's still above 25 so I'm not too concerned.. I'll just keep an eye on it today and add water before i go to bed tonight...

It was cold in our house this morning (68 degrees) and yet the temp in the bator went up to 101... Not anything to be overly concerned with but i did turn it down until the light went off... *It's now back at 99.9 and I'm not going to mess with it anymore... If temps are .5 degree high, it won't hurt them...

I would like to mention that my house is HORRIBLE at keeping a stable temp.. For those of you who don't know me, my husband and I bought a repo trailer on 3/4 acre and got an awesome deal! We've been here for 2 years and only have 2 more to pay on it before it is OURS!!! The trailer is is bad shape though.. The neighbors decided they were going to trash the place when it was in foreclosure and take ANYTHING of value!! Holes in the walls and floors, leaks in the ceiling until we sealed it, can't use one bathtub and the shower in the other bathroom is trying to go through the floor, no carpets, just bare wood... My kitchen... well... LOL... that's a funny subject... Kitchen sink but not hooked up to anything (do dishes and laundry in the other tub), no stove.. We use a microwave, hot plate, electric griddle, rotisserie and toaster over for all of our cooking...

BUT!!! I got this hova bator and it's AWESOME with dealing with the temp fluctuations in this house which can range anywhere between 62 degrees and 83 degrees this time of year!! I would most DEFINITELY recommend it!!!! As for the temp jumping a bit this morning, that was not the bators fault.. We have a fan behind one of the radiator heaters (Oh yeah, heat is radiator heaters and AC is a few window units too! LOL) to circulate the warm air.. My husband moved it and the air was going directly to towards the side of the room the bator was on... So, I can blame that one on him.. ROFL!!!

omG!!! I was adding water and splashed on my thermometer. I think I toasted it!!! And I just set the eggs!! I'm gonna leave it all alone and try to find one local to buy, but not till I'm done freaking out that I have no idea of the temp or humidity all night! Anyone know if Tractor Supply carries bator thermometer/hygrometers?

One more question... What are you saying about doing math? My current one is electronic and says temp and humidity. Do I not just believe?? Omg did I mess up on that?? Am I supposed to convert it somehow? I had no idea...

Currently I am using an Acu>Rite dual digital (from Wally) that reads inside and outside Temps and humidty, and a 24 hour memory for the temp. I put the outside transmitter in the inky (with OUT calibrating it), and on on the first hatch I used it on the results were NOT good at all. It showed a perfect 99 to 100 average and 35 to 40% humidity for the first 18 days and 60 to 65% on days 19 to 28, (yes 28 days, after that I gave up) I had started with 40 eggs, candled twice, @ 1 week and 2 weeks total of 8 not fertile. Out of the 32 left only had 10 hatch and 2 of those did not make it.

Since then I have tried to cailbrate the transmitter. On the humidty side, it calibrated 7 points low on the humidity. So as I log my readings I just add 7 points to the humidity. On the Temp side I used an old medical theometer I borrowed from a dear friend that is a nurse (Thanks Cindy). I found that it was reading about 4 degrees low.

Right now I have 40 eggs in the inky with the Acu>rite outside transmitter. The temp is running at 95 degrees, with a memory of 94 to 96 for the last 24 hours. Add my 4 degree offset and I am right on target. Just to double check I have used the laser themometer on the center egg of the turner, half way from top and am showing a perfect 99.5. That all looks good.

On the humidity side I have not added any water to the troughs and am showing a humity of 35% when add my 7 points, from calibration, that gives me a total of 42% a little high but I have opened one of the plugged holes about 1/2 way so as to let some out.

We went to Office max an bought a monthly desk calender that I have hanging just above the inky. I use this to record my readings, including the summery of the last 24 hours. At the top of the page I have written the adjustments, from calibration, so I do not Panic when I see the 95 on the temp side.


I hope this clutch hatches a lot better than the last.

The thermometers are a little tougher to calibrate but to calibrate the hygrometer, take 1/2 cup of salt and 1/4 cup of water and put them together in a mug or small cup/bowl of some sort.. Place it in a gallon size zip lock bag and place the hygrometer in the bag next to the container with the salt mixture.. Seal the bag and read it in 6-8 hours.. If it is correct, it will read 75%.. If it says 65%, you will need to add 10% when you read it in the incubator.. If it reads 85%, you will need to subtract 10%.. Does this make sense? The one I got from PetSmart was only 3% off so I'm not even going to worry about it through incubation as long as I stay above 25% and below 40%.. The thermometer was dead on!
