Ack! Baby #1 rolled another egg and exposed a pip that I couldn't see from above, the pip is at the wrong end, do I need to do anything?

I would personally say yes if it is pipped right up high and it has been pipped for a while. Can you see the beak? If it starts to try and turn, it can get stuck in the middle of the egg, and suffocate. Sometimes, they will zip and hatch, so watch it if you can see the shell moving, you know it's still in the same spot and getting oxygen. That's good. Then watch it to see if it is progressing. Help it if you can't see any movement, or hear it cheeping. I just helped three BO's out..they are doing great.

this is in our dining room and we have a lady from church coming for dinner- YUM! chicks in brooder are 4 days old so not too stinky yet.
to "somebody" who will say this is dangerous- don't worry not too hot a lamp.

Yep - our eggs and new chicks are always in the dinning room- Cut out the middleman they are nearer the table!

At the moment we also have a sick hen in the cat basket on the floor of the dinning room. I show her the oven every few days. It encourages her to get better lol

Today Max, my dog, all of the chickens and I had a shower together. It has been freezing for weeks, now it's warm but pouring. I bought an extention cord connector cover for my heat lamp over my youngins. When it started to pour, I was happy I bought it. Would have helped if I had remembered to put it on.

Burned out the bulb. All fixed now and I had a second shower. 3rd really if I count the one in the the bathroom. I got everything out to paint my toenails. Max had fun playing with everything on my bed. He really enjoyed the bag of cotton pads. He played for ages. I thought it was so cute until I got up and they were everywhere. Silly turkey.

it got cold last night and I brought in my 3 month old hen and 2, 5 week old chicks they have a heat lamp- but it was still pretty cold I think they liked it. briefly I put in my baby chicks as it was dark and they all crawled under the 3 month old hen and she had her wings spread to hold them.babies having babies.

so final tally... Three hatched... Only one looks to make it, its up chirping and running around!! The other with splayed leg and curled toes, not so great, tried to help it but its pretty bad.. One still in the incubator, swollen purple color tummy, from what I have read its caused from not absorbing the yolk sack properly? Candled the remaining eggs, all dead, one had pipped the air cell and died, the rest I suspect drowned, never tried to pip... So sad to make it so far and see all these fully formed chicks in the shell..
Going to leave the little one with the swollen tummy in the incubator today and see how it does.
DH was frustrated as I was last night doing eggtopsies, , they were perfect chicks! many had almost absorbed their yolk


My brother called last night and wants me to incubate their eggs, I know the best thing to do when you fall from a bike is get right back on, but I didn't realize how much a bad hatch could be so emotionally draining! Told him to go ahead and save their eggs and we could set them this weekend.
Things I'll do different

1) never be so confident
2) move the bator into the spare room, better climate control in there
3) make sure temps are stable, I really think the swing of just 2 degree's is what did it..
4) go back to what worked the first time.. Temp of 101-102 and humidity between 45-50 until lockdown.

My d'Uccle is finally out. Still waiting on the shipped eggs.

I now have a Silkie out.

However, she left a perfectly formed yolk inside the shell. And she is not attached to the shell or yolk and has nothing hanging out her navel. Could it have been a second yolk in there?

Does anyone have suggestions for if the she didn't absorb the yolk?
