Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Man, what a day. Son with Spina Bifida is having problems. Glad I don't have any eggs hatching right now. Had to call an ambulance for him. Poor guy, has had problems off and on since he was born. Hoping they can get a couple of things done with him this time. Two different surgeries is what he needs.

Heidisgran, I would love to file a claim with the USPS but...

The eggs all came to me in one piece (albeit with detached aircells) and they were NOT labeled as hatching eggs ANYWHERE on the box, nor with a "do not xray", or a "this end up" or ANYTHING but a poorly written "fragile" label, so they wouldn't have known to treat them any different. They eggs were individually wrapped in bubble wrap, then layed on their sides (!?) in a loose bag made out of taped bubble wrap and the surrounded by newspaper, not very tightly packed. They were loose enough they could easily shake around in the box about a cm in either direction, but not so loose they could bump into each other so they arrived in one piece.

So it's not the fault of USPS... It's the fault of the shipper. The USPS couldn't know they were shipping hatching eggs since they weren't labeled as such, nor to keep the box facing a certain way... And since the eggs were all on their sides it wouldn't have made a difference if they kept it properly oriented or not. :(

some think that labeling them as shipping eggs causes worse mistreatment...I am not that cynical just thought I'd mention it though....I don't remember did any hatch? what breeds? I know how disappointing it is to have a poor hatch

Just hit 4 days out of 21 left, so day 17. I will be turning off the turner tomorrow morning. I candled and there was motion in 4 eggs from a total of 8 shipped to me. Pretty average thus far but I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch as it were. :| Last time I set eggs it was a dozen under a broody Australorp and only 4/6 developed eggs hatched (chicks were then promptly eaten by the local cats and hawks) so we will have to actually wait and see. My brooder lamp came in on time (woo!) now if the lightbulbs come in too I will be set. 9_9; I have a backup lamp if they don't but, well...

that is perfectly horrible! probably best to hatch inside yourself then!

Quote: That all depends on what hidden genes she may be carrying. It takes a combination of genes to get different colors. She is obviously carrying a gene for black, so crossing her with a splash could give you blue. She will likely throw a couple different colors of babies. She may even throw blue partridge with a splash roo.

that sound beautiful

Maybe @chick-among-us
can help me figure it out lol. Not sure what all the abbreviations stand for on the eggs.

I can't really read the eggs when I blow that up...But I recognize the eggs lol.

The sp means split SILKIED ameraucana ( NOT silkie crosses) gene carrying
OE sp = OLive egger split silkied ameraucana ( hatch 50 % silkied
Blue laced red Wyandotte= BLRW
RIR/sp= baby carries the silkied gene but will look smooth until bred to another silkied bird or split
EE= Easter egger
Am= lav/ black ameraucana pure
Bm= blue maran babies will be black copper blue copper or splash or straight blue ( I have a pure blue in this pen)
SBEL = super blue egg layer
S= silkie
C= bantam Cochins
I= iowacanas ( what we call an Iowa blue ameraucana cross)

I think that's all I have except if you got an EE egg that is a black am roo over a silver penciled brahma girl or a gold laced Wyandotte
Oh the silkied roo over the RIR is blue

Hi chick...I'm in Burleson in N. Texas

Heidisgran, that is precicely why they're in an incubator... No cats in here!

And even if they weren't labeled as hatching eggs (and therefore still went through xrays which I would have rather NOT had happen as I have heard some really bad things about that) they were packaged bad... laying them on their side and putting them in the box such that they could shake around. :( Still not USPSs fault they weren't wrapped right.

Currently they're not hatched yet. 4/8 are going into lockdown tonight and all of them have an aircell that moves against or away from the shell if I rotate the egg, one in particular is in Very bad shape where half the aircell is not attached at all. All the cells are on the right end... I worked really hard to keep them blunt end up the whole time in my Brinsea mini.

if they went thru xray none would develop...I've had my share of badly shipped eggs I completely share your frustration...wishing you luck for your hatch
