Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Quote: exactly correct....somewhere around 100 and between 25 and 40% humidity...I do the lower end UNLESS the eggs raise the humidity then I let it regulate on it's own....as long as your temp is between 99.5 and 101.5 your average...don't forget still air incubators will run higher....measure the temp as close to the eggs as you can....I use the hygrometers that stick through the vent holes or along the cord slot and the probe lays right on top of the eggs

I'm sooooo glad you referred me to this thread. Looks like a lot of fun seeing what everyone is doing.
In total (after Sunday) should be around 4 dozen. BUT many are for my fellow peeps.... I hope. It's so hard to give them away.
Welcome....

Well, my shipped eggs came in. So excited! But they have detached air cells...grrrr.

Not sure what I am going to do just yet. I have them setting fat end up in a carton. But I was going to add them to the incubator tomorrow morning. But I have an automatic turner in there with two eggs (7 days along). We are made a back up bator but it isn't tested yet.

Do you think they would be okay after 24 hrs for the automatic turner?

I would give them a few days to see if they can heal

with the detached air cell let me give you a little hard earned wisdom:old
all you can do is try....you may get all the way to hatch and lose them....the better the air cell looks on day 18 the better their chance!!
fingers crossed but keep it in mind :fl
That would be terrible. :hit
I here by pledge that I will not candle these eggs until right before lockdown. Failure to comply to this pledge can and will be punishable by my husband in the form of canceling my credit card and any other access to funds in which can be used to purchase more eggs.

Hi all :) I've never participated in a hatch-along, but I did set some eggs yesterday (and adding another dozen next week), so I thought I'd post. Good luck on your hatches everyone! I love the stories here, and doesn't the 3-week wait take forever? Especially after lockdown! I'm hatching ameraucanas (splash and wheaten/blue wheaten).

I'll post an update at my first candling. I'm planning to candle between day 5 and 7. Then 10 and 14. I'll post updates and try to get pics too.

Happy hatching! :-D

My thoughts on candling? I would candle eggs at about 10-12 days to remove any where the embryo may have died and might compromise the rest of them by rotting in the incubator. If that was not a possibility, then candling would not be necessary, but it happens that an egg whose chick has perished can begin to rot and weep and even worse, explode, ick.

At 10-12 days, there should be very little doubt if there is a clear one, i.e. one that was either not fertile or did not begin to develop beyond the first or second day. Then, I candle just prior to removing them from the turner for the last three day stretch to be sure they are all full of chicks. This is just the way I do large fowl eggs. The Belgian D'Anvers are very easy to see into so candling at 4-5 days is not too early for them. Experience may dictate what a person could or should do as far as candling.
