Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

That looks good. It should be 99.5 at the top of the eggs (on the egg carton as it is now).

When it is 99.5 at the top of the eggs, it will be cooler than that (97F?) on the floor of the incubator on the metal grate. So if you take the temperature from the floor of the incubator, it will not be accurate and the top of the eggs will get too hot.

I love the still air over the fans. All of my bators are still air..and I like shooting for 100, so if the room temp changes to 99, or 101 or a bit higher, I'm safe. I find here..that 102 is too warm. You will know by the feel of your eggs, if they feel too warm or not. Better a little on the cooler side than the too warm side.

Oh, hey! I just read back and realized.. Are you the one who uses a book under the bator instead of hand turning? And tips as far as how big a book? Thanks.

I think the book I use is about 1.5 inches thick? I try to go for a 45 degree angle (eggs in cartons).

I use the egg cartons for shipped eggs, with holes in the bottom for air ventilation.

for non-shipped eggs, I think laying them on their side with an X and an O is better (flipping x and O up/down)

Very interesting. Well. I already had my x and o's marked for my original plan to hand-turn, so hand turning it is! Thanks, I didn't know one way or the other could weigh on hatch percentage.

sure! It's something I have just started reading about myself... here is another link, this is about tilting vs turning (horizontal incubation)

How frequently should eggs be turned? My auto turner is pre set for every 45 minutes, is that too much? Did I kill all seven eggs?

I think too much is better than too little!
Mine cannot be adjusted like that... I wonder how often it turns...

Well. Here's what I came up with. JUST put them in so it's not too late to fiddle if needed lol. I already had the cartons cut out and trimmed down so I figured lying them on their sides on those would at least keep them from ROLLING EVERYWHERE while I hand turn? That's what I can't stand about trying to hand turn too many at a time.

What do y'all think?

I am getting ready to put in my second batch of eggs. I just got shipped eggs yesterday from ebay and they were well marked and looked packaged good, but all 12 have detached air cells. The other 10 eggs I am putting in are from my backyard mix. I let the shipped eggs settle overnight and I am going to candle again tonight to see if any reattached. I was going to put the eggs in tonight, but I think I am going to give them one more day to try and re-attach. On lockdown, should I leave them upright in a carton? I know that I have time to figure this out, I am just trying to plan ahead.
