Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

I have a 2 day old chick with pullet feathering the other two chicks don't have anything

This sure doesn't work on all chicks, but a few. I have some LF cochins, and the small bantams..no telling by doing this at all. Have to wait for a while. Comb, wattles, tail. I can check the feathers on the sex links, and the leghorns, tell pretty quick. A lot of the EE's too. Ameraucanas.

Here are a few photos of my baby bantam cochins. They are so tiny. Silkie cochin mix actually, and silkies is another one that you can't feather sex. Oh boy, have to wait a while on those.

Check out those feathered feet! They are going to be fluffy butts and legs and feet! There are two black ones that are soo tiny, can't tell by the pictures. They are cute. :)

My hatch...so far all but one still going strong!

I just put some eggs in the incubator. 43 of em. I'm HOPING they're all RIR's but not really sure since I have some Aussies as well. So far all the Aussie eggs were darker than my RIR's so I'm hoping I got the right ones in there since I wanted RIR's. Although I guess I could sell the others if I got any in there. They would be black Aussie and RIR's combo so they should really do some laying. lol Anyway I put my eggs in on Wed. night.

Baby Pics :) we ended up with three and all three pretty different question though, I heard that if they get there wing feathers in quicker then they are probably males is that true? Also anybody have any idea what breed of chickens produce yellow chicks?
Very cute!!!! There are many breeds that start out yellow--including my Wheaton ameraucana. I just visited a farmer co-op today and they had a variety of chicks for sale. There were probably 5-6 breeds listed that they offered in the yellow chick bin. They were all mixed in there. Who knows?!! As far as wing sexing...I'm not positive it works for all chicks, but I'm sure you can get pretty close!! I do know that you have up to 3 days to wing sex them. Enjoy your babies!!! Congrats!

Southchick, if you were closer, I would bring you a casserole. BTW your babies look beautiful!:love
These are all from your flock?

Oh that means so much!! My friends in the chicken world!!! These ARE all from my flock. Thank you! I'm enjoying them :) I have two eggs left in the bator. Becoming less hopeful...it being day 24 with no pips in them. Just very slight movements...ya know!!! With as little sleep I'm getting I may be hallucinating about them moving!!! :lau
I have 15 in the brooder now. Out of 25, and over a span of 5 days Id say that's decent. I've worked hard for these fuzz balls, so gosh darn it I have to brag just a tad :p

Lol I know what you mean about the possible hallucination..I've felt that way before...

those two make a move soon! Maybe you'll wake up to find two new chicks awaiting you! Brag away you've earned it!

My experience was with two 1 month + silkies, and I added three 1 day old chicks to the same brooder. (I purchased these chicks a month apart) It seemed that they got along ok, but I would find the chicks with tumor-like bulges on their necks...I was devastated!! Well, a couple days later the bulges would disappear, but the area was wet/draining. This indicated to me that it was some sort of pecking wound, though I never saw the silkies peck them. I didn't figure all this out very well, I assumed they were going to die from cancer or something, lol! All in all, they turned out fine, but there is a definite risk of injury/death. The stronger ones will always show dominance. They all grew up together, and now the babies are much bigger than the silkies. No problem anymore

thank you for the info!!

I think I will go ahead and hatch more, going to order first weekend in march, they will be a month apart in age, but will keep em separate and hope for the best. since I doubt I will get all hens and only one or two roos from my hatch i'm going to be getting rid of excess roos and wanted to make sure I got a nice number of silkies still. plus I think i'm a "hatchaholic"....

I have some interesting stories about my hatch...which is still not over. Going on 5 days now. Ugh!!! I didn't expect this, but it's still a thrill. I'll keep you all updated. I just have to say that I feel like I brought home a newborn infant...I'm not sleeping, I hurt (mainly my kneecaps from kneeling over the bator) I'm hungry, I constantly worry, I can hear baby sounds in my head even at the grocery store! Someone bring me a casserole stat!!

Alright, here is a sample of my babies..,which I bred an ameraucana black roo with a brown leghorn to get this black beauty!!!!, a French blue copper maran, a blue Wheaton ameraucana, a black copper maran.

lol, if you were closer i'd take you a casserole! and totally understand what you're going through!
