Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Hi! my 9 eggs are going on 24 hours in the incubator this evening. How often would it be OK to candle them? I don't plan to candle them all day long, just once a day, if it's permitted?

I actually like to candle 24 hrs. later. I like to look for the bullseye at that timing. You can see it in some of them. Don't candle them all, just a few to get an idea if they are fertile. If they are, you will see a spot, within the yolk area. Don't move the egg back and forth too fast. Just slowly move it and see if you can see a dark spot move when you do. Like I said, just do a few, then wait for day 7. :)

Ok so I gave into temptation and candled a few of the eggs I had set yesterday and now defintly see the air sacks and small dark red circles now have something to look at later. Another question though what happens if a egg is very porous? On another note our Rhodebar eggs arrived today wish me luck very nervous about them.

Good luck on those Rhodebars, I have more set too. :)

I have hatched many a porous egg. I don't even worry about them anymore.

Thanks the Rhodebars are not porous and I can already see bulls eyes in a couple of them they ended up spending 5 days in delivery was dissapointed they did not arrive sat. but I guess I will have hatching chicks for longer that is if they hatch lol. I am excited for day seven candling as are my kids. The first two dozen eggs are a barn yard mix but I would like to choose three breeds to do pure breds out of would love to find some LF Cochin having trouble locating eggs :( we have two Cochins already may need to order day old chicks I guess.

Day 9 for me now. My humidity was starting to fall so I had to open the incubator to add water, while I had it opened I went ahead and candled.

16 of the original 17 are moving!! Which means one of the ones I had flagged as questionable on day 5 actually turned out to be just fine!

The one clear one I went ahead and eggtopsied and it was completely scrambled. I'm thinking that it was probably laid from the roost and fell to the floor, so it never had a chance.

It is so cool seeing them move around in there!

Day four, decided to do a test candle on 5 eggs, all show signs of veining with of course the blue eggs being more noticeable ( they are very light and easy to see) Temp and humidity holding very well, I haven't had to touch the dial as of yet, way different than last time when I was so nervous.
Looking forward to candling them all on Thursday night :) (day 7)
