Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

57 sounds ok. When they start to hatch the humidity will also raise on its own.

I can get up higher, but it does seem to be going up on it's own. Last night before bed it was 53 and this morning it was 57/58. Do they have to be actively hatching or does it raise as they approach hatching?

yes! I love this stuff too :)
if you buy clearance or the colors people don't want, you can get it very cheap!
I like that stuff too. I only use it in the hatcher. It's not cheap where I live. Wish it was. I'd use that instead. Changing 2 or 3 times a day would get very expensive.

This is what I woke up to this morning in my incubator. Only day 20! Now 28 eggs to go, I hope.
Cute little babies.

It's day 20 for my two little eggs. Should I be seeing them rock around or hearing them peep? It's still and quiet in there, I'm getting worried

. I have been very strong no to open the incubator and check them, but **** it's hard!
if there are NO external pips, then it is safe to open the incubator and you can candle to look for internal pips if you want to.

the risk comes from opening the incubator when the inner membrane is exposed to air. if there is no pip yet, then this cannot happen.

I think the air sacks were a little small, but they are bantam rooster/ size hen crosses. One egg was dark, full and actively moving. The other had an ominous black spot on one side of the egg, almost yolk sized, but the egg became completely dark as I turned it. I think I saw movement, but my eyes may have been playing tricks on me. aside from the air cells, candling seemed to me right on par with all the charts I looked at. My humidity is at 57, should. Raise it up or wait for the first pip?

the best way to calculate weight loss is by weighing the eggs on day 1, 7, 14, 18, etc.

on the humiditiy: some folks arbitrarily raise the humidity on day 19, personally I will wait until the first pip to increase humidity to 55-65%

I checked one egg very quickly (rsn to the bathroom, candled for 10 seconds ran back. I could not see the air cell. What does that mean?

Well, it is one of those mornings..............
First pip last night....it is high on the egg and no progress for about 14 hours......still chirping.
I do not think it can finish due to the location of the pip...hate this..............
I will likely pull it out to help a little later if no progress..nothing else has pipped.......
I may have messed up putting them in lockdown a day late ?

Have been really worried anyway because of small air cells
and the shipped eggs had messed up air cells.........21 Days yesterday..........

Congratulations stewedmamma.........................

I found several rolls at second hand stores (Goodwill, St Vincent de Pauls) I think I paid .50 cents a roll...Of course they aren't complete rolls but enough for several hatches... Its my go to place when I am looking for anything..

Hi everyone, JDchicks sent me the link to this fabulous thread. So I am new to chickens and I am incubating my first batch of eggs from my own Silkie hen. I only have one hen and two rooters, so I gathered eggs over a 10 day period and I am now on day 9.... I almost didn't put in the oldest eggs cause everything I read led me to believe they were too old. I figured heck I won't loose anything giving it a try, discard it now discard it later...... no difference. I have studied the candling charts and I guess there is a big learning curve with that stuff. On day 6 I thought my 3 oldest eggs were goners. But today I candled again and I don't see any change with my 5 youngest eggs but the 3 oldest that I thought were red ring (guess I don't know what I am looking at) I started to see the veining. then I took a 2nd flashlight and I see something moving! Yipeee! So the three I thought were no good I think are good and then that leaves the 5 that I thought were good what is going on with them? I just see a solid blob floating around in there. Do you think they were not fertile? Are they still developing and maybe they are behind the others but that doesn't make sense.....What's going on! LOL Now I am sorry I didn't throw in that egg I gathered 2 days after I started incubating..... I read that it was ok to do it next day but that was the cut off.
