Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

you candle down through the air cell...when your looking through the bottom you looking through the yolk...you can't really see the chick

I have a old slide projector, I place an empty toilet paper roll over the light source and put the egg , skinny side down, right over the light...

Am I doing it wrong?? Skinny end, fat end, sideways...lol

.

Well, here are the results! 34 healthy chicks out of the 36 eggs that were fertile. Giving the other two eggs the rest of the day, but I'm almost positive they are dead...

I Lasted three days, threw up every night and finally admitted to myself I couldn't tolerate it.. mind you its not the butchering, I have always helped process our deer etc...
I once told my sister who couldn't understand how we could kill and eat the animals we raise that killing isn't done for the joy, its done for the necessity. We are meat eaters, I would rather raise my animals with kindness and care, knowing where the animal came from and how it was treated then some factory raised animal. Our animals are reverenced and the act is done quickly with as little pain as possible, and thanks are always given for the life taken to sustain us.

I suppose I have more of a problem with folks who have a problem with what we do, questioning how we can do it then with anyone else. Folks are desensitized these days, they go to the store and the meat is neatly packaged, they don't care what the animal went through to get there.

This is exactly how I explain it to my family every time I they start talking about not understanding why I would go through all the hassle of taking care of these animals and then having a processing day each year. They think is weird and gross and say its easier to go to the store to buy the chicken when you need it. I say my chickens were loved and pet and they walked on grass every day, they ate bugs and had fresh air and sunlight, they ran through the yard with my other animals and my children. I remind them that I don't like process day it is sad and we do take a moment before we start and apologize for having to take their lives and thank them for the meals that they will provide my family. It gives me great satisfaction to know that I can literally put food I raised and grew on my table. And its healthy and delicious too.

Day 21 and no movement. I'm getting so nervous and sad something went wrong. First time, only two eggs...I feel like were just destined for failure. Ohh how I would love to see a fluffy little chick right now.
